I have a beautifully reconditioned pair of the legendary Magnepan Tympani 4 available for acquisition. Each driver (not tweeters) is painstakingly cleaned of residual glue and relaminated with the least amount of glue necessary. This increases driver speed and accuracy. The true ribbon tweeters are practically new and play beautifully. All crossover capacitors were replaced with premium audiophile grade caps and they are outfitted with new black factory socks. They are available for a $6,000 donation to support Christian missions. I received these for free and I didn’t have to do that much to them so I’m thinking that $5,000 would be tax deductible. I’m spending some time this morning doing an onboard crossover upgrade on a 1.7i for a friend in Montana. Here are the before and after photos. Within the next week or so, I hope to be able to launch a new product where the internal crossover capacitors can be removed easily by the purchaser and a simple gold plated screw terminal plugged in where you un snipped the wires.  I’m so busy at the moment. I don’t have time to mess with it today. It will sell for $425 and will take about 30 minutes to install per speaker. I’ll do an install video to make it easier.

Phil Figura, the Weekend Audiophile here. Sunday is a BIG day. I’m picking up a 20.7 tomorrow. Those of you who follow me know that I’ve been selling top quality previously loved audiophile gear since 2018. You also know that I go through every speaker and make sure that they will give years more audio enjoyment. If anything goes wrong, I’ll fix it for you for free or at a reasonable rate depending on the issue. My gear sells fast because of this and because I sell upgraded gear for less than you can buy standard used gear from some guy who his used gear. Because of this, most of my gear sells in hours of when I list them. I have a steady stream of people who afterwards reach out wishing they had seen the listing in time. TWO FREE TYMPANI IV!!!!!!!!!!! I saw the listing and I couldn’t believe it. I reached out to the owner 10 times in 20 minutes hoping to be in the running. I heard nothing in response for hours. I figured I got there too late. Sometimes five minutes is too much time to pass. Someone else beat you to it. I started thinking that someone else always has all the luck when it comes to these deals. These crazy deals that seem to find others. And then it happened. I got a simple polite short message, suggesting that I emailed them. Man, I was super excited. That was the message that I saw on a listing and I couldn’t believe it. It was about an hour and a half from me so I thought there was no way this was actually happening. Two free Tympani 4!!! there had to be a catch. I arrive at the pointed time to a beautiful home overlooking the Appalachian Trail and the Shenandoah Valley down below,. The owner was very polite and welcoming. This wasn’t going to be a simple grab and go though. He’d love the speakers for several decades, and he wanted to make sure that they were going into the right hand. We talked for an hour about different things: our love for music; how I got into Magnepan’s; how he did; how I started working on Magnepan’s and what my process is, and finally what I might do with two pairs of some of the finest speakers ever made. I still thought there had to be a catch and there was. He simply wanted to make sure they were going to the right home that they would be someone else’s prize possession. That they would not simply end up in a dumpster after giving him so many years of joy. He starts going through paperwork and shares with me that one of the pairs was actually owned by Lou Johnson of Conrad Johnson and that he had actually modified the crossover and improved it quite a bit. He provided the owner with schematics and details about crossover points and slope. It was a true treasure trove of documents and included the ad for the used speakers as having been owned by Lou Johnson. After about an hour of talking and learning and sharing came the time for me to actually view these speakers. No, they weren’t in perfect shape two of the eight bass panels  were missing, but everything else was there. The mid base weren’t perfect condition. The tweeters were fully intact and looked fairly new. The crossovers looked like they came straight from the factory. I was dumbfounded, especially when I was shown the factory boxes.

THE AFTERMATH!!! As for my plans for the speakers, 1) one pair is gonna go to a good friend who is local and has always wanted a pair these. As luck would have it I already have bass panels that will work nicely to substitute for the missing panels. 2) The other pair, the pair upgraded by Lou Johnson, they are special. I’m going to loan them to another local audiophile when they are ready. Thereafter, I’ll GIVE THEM to someone who makes an appropriate donation to a certain Christian charity I’m affiliated with. They can pick out any fabric, factory or custom and I’ll even do custom wood frames/rear projecting baffles. I’m still trying to work out the details and have the custom wood working mostly done. I’ll post details but welcome inquiries in the meantime.

THE UPRIGHT BASS! A year and a half ago I launched the LOW (Little Open Woofer) and was happy with the sound but just couldn’t get them to blend well with the mains. Like many other subs, open baffle or otherwise, they required constant adjustment to get them to sound right for a particular song. They were always too much or not enough. It was also volume dependent. No matter what I did, I could always tell where the sub started and the Maggie left off. I left a pair of these with a friend and included a 1000 watt subwoofer amplifier. Same problem. The other part I wasn’t liking was the constant demand from that group of audiophiles interested solely in specs and achieving a completely flat response to 15 HZ. As a result I stopped making them after selling just a few.

I’m in the process of making my interpretation of the never manufactured 30.7 for condos and I started to think about blending cones with Maggie’s again, this time using a custom passive crossover rather than active dsp amplification. It definitely takes more r+d but I’m really happy with the results. The Maggies and the bass drivers blend seamlessly and the low end is incredibly articulate. In order to bring out the best in the Maggies, I use premium capacitors that are found in Sound Lab speakers and other ultra premium speakers. As a result, the crossover allows the Maggies to play at their absolute best.

These play into the upper 20HZ range very nicely but they aren’t really configured as a traditional sub. They are crossed at 100 hz, as are the Maggies, but they have noticeable output up to 150 hz right in the area where dipole cancelation really starts to take hold. As a result, they supplement the bass of the Maggies right were they need it and take over altogether in the lower regions. Because they play in a region where direction matters, I put them on some chrome stands I had for another project. Thus the name Upright Bass.

I’m going to refine the aesthetics and see what happens. This is my personal build so please note the following: this is not a kit; I am not selling or giving away plans; and I am not providing specs. I don’t say that to be rude. We all have to have boundaries and I already know that the questions are coming. For those interested, this is a blend of subwoofer cabinet designs- slot loaded open baffle front and ripole rear with a single 10” woofer in each cabinet.
