📞 Throwback Thursday

Hartelco’s story began in 1905 as the Cedar County Farmers Telephone Company, created by local farmers who wanted a better way to keep their community connected.

The earliest telephone lines were anything but high-tech—wires were strung across buildings, fence posts, or anything else available. To place a call, someone would even rattle a penny in a can at one end of the line!

By 1908, it had exchanges in Hartington and Fordyce, 100 miles of poles and 480 subscribers, along with connections to Crofton and Wynot.

It became the Hartington Telephone Company in 1952, moved its rural lines underground in 1971 and 1972, and helped bring cable television to Hartington in 1981 with a total of 13 channels!

Today, we’re proud to continue that story as Hartelco. The technology may look very different, but our purpose remains the same: serving our neighbors and keeping our local communities connected.

More than 120 years later, we’re still here—and still proud to call this community home. ❤️
