AI isn’t a “someday” technology for state governments anymore — it’s already here. This GovTech article looks ahead to 2026 and explores how states may adopt AI, where they’re experimenting, and how they’re trying to balance innovation with oversight. The next couple of years could be a turning point for how government uses AI in real, practical ways.

State governments are expected to deploy AI in 2026 with an increased focus on returns on investment as they face complex policymaking restrictions enacted by a recent executive order signed by President Donald Trump.

Data is the backbone of modern government decision-making — from budgets and services to risk scoring and AI forecasts. But what happens when the data itself is weaponized?

A new article from GovTech highlights a rising cyber threat called data poisoning — where attackers deliberately introduce false or misleading data into systems with the intent of skewing analytics, models, and automated decisions. In the public sector, the consequences can range from misallocated resources to distorted policy outcomes — all while evading traditional defenses.

As AI and machine learning become central to how agencies operate, understanding and defending against threats like data poisoning isn’t just technical — it’s foundational to public trust and mission success.

Cybersecurity experts say AI and automation are changing how much impact manipulated data can have on government technology systems.

A major cyberattack recently disrupted OnSolve CodeRED — the emergency-alert system used by towns, cities, police and fire departments across the U.S. — and attackers have claimed they stole user names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses and passwords.

If you signed up for alerts through CodeRED, now is the time to change your password immediately — especially if you’ve reused the same one on other services. Use a strong, unique password for each account (or better yet, a password manager + 2FA).

Risk management company Crisis24 has confirmed its OnSolve CodeRED platform suffered a cyberattack that disrupted emergency notification systems used by state and local governments, police departments, and fire agencies across the United States.

Data has become treasure for public agencies but this data and privacy of individuals must be protected.

Proponents of synthetic data see it as the future, saying it will help government have more access to valuable data while at the same time protecting individual privacy.
