The latest news regarding ICD-10 coding is that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has released the updates that will go into effect on April 1, 2024. These updates include 395 new billable codes, 25 deletions, and 13 revisions. The new codes are in areas such as external causes of morbidity, social determinants of health (SDOH), and osteoperosis.
Here are some of the highlights of the 2024 ICD-10 updates:
* There are 8 new codes for social determinants of health (SDOH), such as codes for housing instability and food insecurity.
* There are 13 new codes for osteoperosis, including codes for different types of fractures and for the use of bisphosphonates.
* There are 6 new codes for external causes of morbidity, such as codes for injuries caused by fireworks and by electric shock.
* There are 25 codes that have been deleted, such as codes for certain types of pneumonia that are no longer considered to be separate diseases.
* There are 13 codes that have been revised, such as codes for the severity of dementia.
These updates are important for healthcare providers and payers to be aware of, as they can affect reimbursement and the way that diagnoses are coded. Healthcare providers should stay up-to-date on the latest ICD-10 updates by reviewing the CMS website or by subscribing to a coding compliance newsletter.
In addition to the updates that will go into effect on April 1, 2024, CMS is also considering adding new codes for conditions such as long COVID and monkeypox. These codes are not yet finalized, but they are expected to be released in the coming months.
