I lied to you yesterday.
That quote I posted? The one that “stopped me cold”? Jimmy Carr wasn’t its author.
Neither were the dozen other famous names the internet has slapped on it for fifty years.
A 19-year-old named Veronica Shoffstall wrote it in 1971. For her college yearbook. Nobody you’d recognize, nobody important, just a teenager who put something true on a page.
And then the world did what the world does.
It took her words, peeled her name off, and handed the credit to whoever sounded big enough to deserve it. Borges. Carr.
Anyone but the girl who actually wrote it.
Here’s what should make you think:
She had the idea.
She said the perfect thing.
And she got almost nothing for it.
Having the idea is the cheapest part.
Saying the perfect thing is the cheapest part. The credit, the reach, the win, none of it goes to whoever thought of it first.
It goes to whoever’s still in the arena. Whoever most visible. Whoever keeps showing up and amplifying the work after everyone else went quiet.
You are guarding an idea right now like it’s the valuable thing. (It isn’t. It never was.)
Someone with half your talent is going to execute the exact thing you’re sitting on, and take everything you wanted from it.
Not because they’re better. Because they moved and you didn’t.
So plant the garden. Put your name on it. And keep showing up until the name sticks.
That’s what I’m doing here. Out loud, pushing for something more and looking for the people doing the same.
