📕 Your weekly fraud insights...
Fraudsters moved fast this week:
▪︎ A $410K stolen Treasury check nearly cashed.
▪︎ Mule networks funneling stolen funds through unsuspecting banks.
▪︎ A reconciliation exploit pulling out almost half a million overnight.
The common thread? Weak points fraudsters know how to hit.
Stronger ID validation, mule detection, and tighter reconciliation can shut it down.

There's a national day for *everything*. Today is National 401(k) day. It has us thinking about fraud...(that's our thing at AFS)

People think of their 401(k) as “set it and forget it”. But for FIs and account holders, that mindset can be risky.

Retirement accounts are increasingly becoming fraud targets:
▪︎ Stolen credentials → unauthorized ACH debit requests
▪︎ Intercepted rollover checks → altered and cashed elsewhere
▪︎ BEC schemes → fraudulent wire transfer instructions

This National 401(k) Day, it’s a reminder for FI teams as much as for account holders and members:

👩‍💻 Tellers & Frontline
▪︎ Be alert to unusual requests around retirement distributions
▪︎ Slow down when customers seem pressured or confused

📑 Back Office
▪︎ Double-check check reissues and rollover instructions
▪︎ Monitor for out-of-pattern ACH/wire activity

🔒 Ops & Risk Teams
▪︎ Push for direct electronic transfers, not mailed checks
▪︎ Enforce out-of-band callbacks for wire/ACH instruction changes

Be proud of your 401(k) but don't ignore it. Protect it by monitoring it, and help your account holders do the same.

How do financial institutions maintain their footprint without opening or operating potentially unsustainable branches? To stay connected with their customers, many FIs are considering ways to maintain a lighter footprint, especially as demand for cash continues.

Branch transformation efforts in recent years have shown the value that smarter technologies provide, including better-equipped ATMs and ITMs. But successfully putting these ‘digital tellers’ into the marketplace, without a branch in support, will be the true test of their mettle. Financial institutions dealing with rising costs, staff shortages and a potential economic slowdown may consider shifting to remote deposit.

Whitepaper | Economic downturns have a tendency to change the fraud landscape for the worse. The result is that paper checks, which are one of the payment methods most impacted by fraud, are likely to become increasingly at risk. Easy to duplicate, deposit or steal, check fraud represents a persistent challenge to financial institutions. Given today’s economic outlook, that challenge is likely to come to a head.
