There are two ways to own a piece of safety equipment.

One is the kind you have to keep checking. Somebody drives out, opens the enclosure, tests the batteries, and hopes the answer is the same as last time.

The other is the kind you stop thinking about.

The difference is usually a decision nobody outside engineering ever hears about.
The batteries in our solar towers are sealed gel.

They are low maintenance, they tolerate deep discharge and recovery, and they hold up against temperature extremes and vibration.

The electrolyte inside has a putty-like consistency, so it will not spill acid. And unlike lithium-ion, it does not combust on contact with water v***r, which matters when the equipment is standing on a beach, next to a pool deck, or out in Great Lakes weather.

Small engineering decisions like that one are why a tower installed today is still answering in year seven.

Three things worth checking before students walk back in.

𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Every emergency phone and call station on your property, confirmed working, on the systems they are supposed to be on.

𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿𝘀. When someone presses the button at the far end of the athletic field, where does that call actually go, and is that still the right person? Staff turnover over the summer is the usual reason the answer changed.

𝗙𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿. If the primary path goes down, what is the backup, and has anyone tested it since last year?

None of this takes long.

All of it is easier to find out in August than in October.

Most emergencies on a campus are witnessed before they are reported.

There is a well-documented pattern behind that gap.

The more people who are present, the less likely any one of them is to act, because everyone assumes someone else already has.

It is not indifference.
It is uncertainty about whether this is really an emergency, and about whether stepping in is your place.

What closes that gap is making the next step obvious.

A visible call station does a quiet amount of work here. It tells a student that help is reachable from right where they are standing, that summoning it does not require a judgment call about whether the situation is serious enough, and that they will not be doing it alone.

That is the whole idea behind Safe Community Spaces. The people already on your campus are the first responders in the truest sense, and our job is to make it easy for them to act.

As the semester starts, it is worth telling students plainly. If something looks wrong, you do not need to be sure. Use the call station.

Every park, campus, and public property has a spot the power lines never reached.

A trailhead.
A far parking lot.
The end of a pier.

People still need to be able to access help from there.

Solar makes that possible without digging a trench across the property to get to it, and it is often the difference between a safety plan that covers the whole property and one that covers the parts that were easy.

As students head back to Boise State this fall, safety is on a lot of minds. A recent KTVB story spotlights a resource students rely on: more than 70 emergency blue light phones across campus and along the Greenbelt, each a direct connection to help at the push of a button.

One detail stuck with us. Students told KTVB they'd never needed to use a blue light phone, but simply knowing it's there gives them peace of mind as they move across campus and along the river.

A quick note on who we are: Code Blue designs and builds emergency communication systems including blue light phones like these, from our home in Holland, Michigan.

That's the whole point of this work. Visible, ready, community-driven safety, right where and when it's needed.

A recent article from The Maine Campus shared that some students are concerned about replacing blue light phones with a safety app. One student said, “Not everyone has their phone on them or charged, so having something physically there helps people feel safer.”

This highlights something important. Blue light systems do not have to be removed to stay relevant. When they are upgraded and connected with modern tools like apps, cameras, and cloud alerts, campuses can offer stronger and more dependable safety options for everyone.
