I posted an exaggerated reel of how Jewish organizations choose their brand colors. Someone commented, "true, but blue is the color of chessed."

First of all, is it? Rabbis can weigh in.

If it's true and chessed is the core of your organization, blue makes total sense. Great! Use it!

Most schools and organizations have more going on: specific beliefs, a specific audience, a personality with a lot of layers. Your colors can carry all of that.

Here are some examples to start with.

Why pay for brand strategy when AI will interview you for free?

It's a fair question. Tell AI to act like a professional brand strategist, answer its questions, and hand the results to a designer. AI would ask you tons of great questions.

On a basic level, AI gives you the most common version of whatever you ask for. Ask it for a Jewish image and it's always blue with a menorah, whether it's Pesach or a school fundraiser. That same surface-level read shows up in a brand strategy. It's just harder to spot in words.

I'm in the community. I know what to ask for, I know what you mean when you answer, and I can tell if a strategy will make sense to the families you're trying to reach.

Six years in, my office finally feels right. I knew it was hot in there the whole time. It just never felt urgent enough to fix, so I worked around it.

A lot of Jewish nonprofits run the same way. The director walks every new donor through the vision personally, and new staff pick up the mission secondhand and fill in the gaps. It works well enough that nobody stops to fix it, and eventually staff and volunteers are each telling a different version of who you are.

If you followed all three steps, congratulations. Your mission statement needs a glossary and your website could swap logos with the organization down the street.

Nobody warns you how odd it feels to be the target audience for a message and still need it translated. This one was written for parents like me, and I was doing the mental math on which Hebrew word meant what.

I write content for an outreach camp I work with, and the audience changes with every post. Donors get one set of words, families get another, and parents hear things differently than campers do. I'm very careful about which phrases go where.

Please be careful with what you write for your organization 🙏

In a place like South Florida, Jewish schools stay full without trying. Families show up either way, so a school doesn't have to work to stand out.

That's exactly why so many schools never bother getting specific about who they're for or what makes them different.

But not having to differentiate isn't the same as not needing to. Schools should still be doing this work. Clarity now builds a stronger, more intentional school later, not just a full one.

I never met or spoke with Monika before designing her brand.

The brand strategy session happened first, run separately, documented in full. Identity pillars, voice, values, all of it written down before I ever opened a design file. I worked from that document alone.

That's the actual power of a strategy session done right. It's specific enough that someone else could pick it up and build from it accurately, without ever sitting in the room.

Ready for that kind of clarity for your organization? Scedule a call and we can talk about it.

Every strategy session starts the same way: an organization thinks it already knows what it stands for.

Most of the time, what actually comes up is a mix. Real belief, tangled up with what leadership thinks it's supposed to believe, borrowed from whatever's normal in the space or whatever's already been done. Untangling that is most of the work.

Once the real version surfaces, everything after it gets easier to build. Especially the design.

All those ADHD and mental health educators who helped me understand myself, that's what changed my life.

I'm a designer, not a therapist. I can't do that work directly. But I can build brands for the people who do. So that the right person finds them in the right moment.
