Interesting article about the need for accessible telemedicine apps.
https://apple.news/AX3A3UKcjSpyorPkJ29QMcQ

Of course, I found this issue to be especially pertinent because of all of my recent health struggles that landed me in the hospital earlier this month, and now has me setting-up multiple follow-up appointments/consultations with no less than four different physician offices. But more specifically, I was thinking back to my own personal experience with a telemedicine platform called Doxy.Me which I was never able to get to work with my assistive technology.

This was back in February 2021 when my primary care physician had attempted to facilitate a virtual wellness check with me to avoid having me come into their office during Covid. But after failing to get the app to work with my JAWS screen reader on my PC, or my subsequent attempt using the “Voiceover” accessibility feature on my iPhone, we ended up resorting to having a regular telephone conversation, which based on the article, unfortunately sounds like an all too common experience for persons with disabilities like me. When you add in some of the inaccessible kiosks like the ones being used by many of the local labs to check-in patients, or on the flip side, the old-school pen-and-paper “health history” in-take forms that just about every physician office requires you to fill out during your first visit, you start to understand how the specific needs of persons with disabilities goes well beyond addressing some inaccessible telemedicine apps, and that the current healthcare system has a long way to go before it is truly accessible for all consumers.

Telehealth platforms and digital healthcare products have exploded over the past two years, fuelled by the Covid-19 pandemic. Failing to ensure that these solutions are fully accessible to people with disabilities is not just a matter of social injustice – it will, in the long run, cost lives.

Yesterday marks exactly 5 years since we had to say goodbye to our beloved Murph dog.

I didn’t have my blog back then, so in a belated tribute to my old friend, I thought maybe I’d repurpose the write-up that I had prepared for Teresa to post on Facebook at the time - not the abbreviated version that she ended up sharing with everyone, but the full, unabridged stream of consciousness that had come pouring out of me that night, when all of my memories and emotions were as raw as the stinging loss that I had just suffered.

And while it’s impossible to sum up a special friendship, an entire life, in just a few sentences, or even a long, rambling journal entry out on a web site somewhere, Murphy had occupied such a big part of our lives, overflowing our hearts with love and joy the entire 13 ½ years he was with us, that I felt his story deserved a permanent spot on my blog.

So, to that end, here you go buddy. We love and miss you!

Created as a “how to” video for other blind/low-vision users, this episode covers how to use the JAWS screen reader to access the user profile menu and log-in and log-out options in Sakai, which is an important feature for being able to switch back and forth between different users and roles during testing.

Its February 2022, do you know where your accessibility consultant is?

He’s seriously contemplating a career change (well, not really—but he’s having some serious fun imagining what it would be like to be the King of his very own remote island!)

Check out the latest installment of the “Tales of the Reluctant Blind” blog to learn more.

Well, I don’t want to jinx it, but there’s a better than average chance that I might be packing my family up soon and moving overseas to pursue a new career opportunity. Of course, this is all completely unexpected, nothing I had planned for, but you know what they say, “When opportunity comes...
