The EU hit the critical milestone recently completing EUDR's simplification review to analyze its impact on businesses. EUDR appears as though it will be implemented instead of delayed for a third time. Accordingly, we'll be reviewing EUDR content on our posts to refresh your memory!

EUDR's Article 9 requires full supply chain due diligence to prevent deforestation. Products must meet origin country laws and UN human rights standards, with specific data needed for verification:

📍 GPS coordinates (minimum 6 decimals)
🗺️ Acreage and tract shape polygons
🛰️ Remotely-sensed data (satellite images, air photos) with geotags
đź“… Production date and time range

Is EUDR concerning you? Contact us to discuss how GoTrace can help your compliance efforts.

Who Adds Data to the Blockchain?

A shared ledger is only as good as the partners who contribute to it. A common misconception is that "the technology" creates the data. In reality, it is a collaborative effort that requires human participation.

Blockchain is the digital "cement" that holds together contributions from every stakeholder:

đźšś The Farmer: Record harvest yield, origin locations, and initial quality using a simple mobile interface.
đźš› Logistics Providers: Track GPS coordinates in real time, automate input through IoT sensors, monitor temperature, etc
🏭 Processors: Record batch numbers, refining steps, and packaging dates.
đź“‹ Certifiers: Anchor digital "stamps of approval" directly to the product's digital twin.

For the first time, all parties in a supply chain can come together to create a trusted and verifiable journey that consumers can be confident in.

Immutability: What does it really mean?

Once a story is written on the blockchain, it can’t be rewritten. In industries like seafood or timber sourcing, "editing" a record can hide a multitude of undesired activity like illegal logging, mislabeling, or unsustainable fishing practices.

When we say our records are immutable, we mean if a product’s origin is logged at the source, it is locked in. Any changes further down the line are recorded as new entries, leaving the original truth intact.

That’s how brands can prove their sustainability claims aren't just marketing, by making claims based on facts.

The "Live Audit" Advantage with Blockchain

Traditional audits are reactive, manual, and rely on a "document chase" through old emails and folders. But with blockchain, compliance is built-in, not added on later. Records are timestamped and cryptographically secured. Auditors get a view-only "digital thread" of the entire journey. It turns a month-long headache into a five-minute trail, where every detail is digitally authenticated and provable.

How it works:

Traditional audits require an auditor to manually verify that "Document A" matches "Reality B." Cryptographic auditing changes the workflow:

The Auditor’s Tool: The auditor uses a verification script to re-hash the raw data provided by the supply chain partners.

The Comparison: The system compares the newly generated hash with the hash stored on the blockchain at the time of the event.

The Verdict: * Hashes Match: The data is 100% identical to what was recorded at the source. âś…

Hashes Disagree: The data has been altered, and the audit fails.

"Garbage In, Garbage Out"
Can blockchain prevent fraud? Yes, if the whatever is being input is correct.

Blockchain is a perfect record-keeper, not a lie detector. If false data is entered at the start and not corrected later, the ledger will simply record that lie forever.

True fraud prevention requires reliable data capture, and many small bits of data can add up to show a larger picture. For instance, a full traceabilty solution would include, Automated IoT sensors, Secure GPS and QR tracking, and human data entry. Blockchain doesn't magically prevent all instances of fraud, but it protects the integrity of whatever it records, allowing us to piece together all the separate parts and create a digital mosaic of the true picture.🛡️

Most supply chains still run on fragmented data.

One company logs origin. Another logs transport. Another handles certification.
Everyone has their version of the event, but no one shares the same one, or has the entire picture.

Here’s the real difference:

Traditional databases = many owners, many versios
Blockchain = shared record, multiple verifiers

Every step (harvest 🌲 → processing 🏭 → shipping 🚢 → delivery 📦) adds a new entry that everyone can see and trust.

No more reconciling spreadsheets.
No more “which version is correct?”

One shared timeline, one source of truth âś…

While the repeated delays of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) have sparked debate, a significant ""silver lining"" is emerging. These extensions have provided a critical window for industries to move beyond ""check-the-box"" compliance and toward the development of truly resilient, high-integrity traceability systems. This extra time is being used to bridge the gap between large-scale data requirements and the realities of smallholder farmers, ensuring that digital tools and geolocation systems are not just operational, but inclusive and robust enough to handle the complexities of global supply chains.

The result is a shift from hurried, fragmented reporting to a more transparent ecosystem where data accuracy is prioritized. By refining IT infrastructures and strengthening collaborative partnerships during this period, businesses are building the foundations for a system that can withstand long-term scrutiny. Rather than just a pause, these delays are serving as a necessary phase for maturing the technology and trust required to make a deforestation-free future both verifiable and sustainable.

♻️ California’s Bold Steps Toward Producer Responsibility! ♻️

California's EPR laws are serious business, with huge non-compliance penalties, forcing companies to take responsibility for the end-of-life impact of their products. These laws aim to reduce waste, promote recycling, and drive sustainable product design. However, they have faced setbacks, and just recently Governor Newsom delayed SB 54's implementation.

🔹 Plastic Pollution Prevention & Packaging Act (SB 54) (2022)
📉 25% Reduction in single-use plastic packaging & foodware by 2032
♻️ 65% Recycling Rate for single-use plastics by 2032
🏢 Producer Responsibility Organization (PRO) to oversee compliance
đź’° $5 Billion industry-funded effort to mitigate plastic pollution, especially in disadvantaged communities

🔹 Responsible Textile Recovery Act (SB 707) (2024)
đź‘• Producers Must Implement collection, reuse & recycling programs for textiles
đź“… Operational by 2026, Full Compliance by 2028
⚖️ Fines Up to $50,000/Day for non-compliance Regulatory Hurdles:

California’s EPR laws are a major step toward sustainable waste management, holding producers accountable for their products' full lifecycle. 🌍

♻️ Maine Leads the Way with Groundbreaking Packaging Law! ♻️

In 2021, Maine became the first U.S. state to enact an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) law for packaging, shifting the cost of recycling from municipalities to the companies that introduce packaging into the market. Now, with implementing rules finalized in December 2024, the program is set to go live in 2027, with producer payments based on 2026 data.

Here’s how it works:
âś… Producers Pay: Companies contribute fees based on the quantity & recyclability of their packaging.
âś… Funds Support Recycling: Payments help reimburse municipalities, invest in recycling infrastructure, and educate residents.
âś… Stewardship Organization (SO): A selected SO will manage operations under Maine DEP oversight.
âś… Incentivizing Sustainability: Fees are tied to environmental impact, pushing brands toward greener packaging choices.

This law is a game-changer for recycling efficiency, reducing waste, improving sustainability, and easing the burden on local communities. 👏♻️
