Although they often appear on the same audit checklist, calibration and quality control (QC) serve two fundamentally different purposes in laboratory operations.

🔹Calibration verifies that an instrument measures accurately against a traceable reference standard. It's performed periodically to ensure measurement accuracy.

🔹Quality Control (QC) verifies that your analytical process is producing reliable results during each run using control samples and statistical monitoring.

Here's a simple way to remember it:

✔️ Calibration validates the instrument.
✔️ Quality Control validates the result.

One cannot replace the other.

Relying only on calibration leaves you blind to day-to-day process issues. Relying only on QC doesn't guarantee your instrument is traceably accurate. Both are essential for maintaining data integrity and demonstrating compliance with ISO/IEC 17025.
