Can You Spot the Similarities?

In 2020, Marriot Hotels is hacked, and attackers steal the data of 5.2 million guests.

In 2021, after compromising IT management contractor Solar Wind, Russian attackers compromised at least nine federal agencies.

In 2022, a T-Mobile store owner is convicted of making $25 million through illegally unlocking and unblocking hundreds of thousands of cell phones.

The first is a group of small-time hackers infiltrating a hotel chain to steal guest data. The second is a powerful nation state using Advanced Persistent Threats to infiltrate a government. The third is a single store owner making millions providing an illegal service. All seem very different. Yet, all have one thing in common.

The Solar Winds attackers compromised federal agencies and hid their presence on the network because of poor identity management. Cybersecurity Roadmap in U.S. manufacturing for the next five years. The purpose of the Roadmap is to present a robust and aggressive pathway to transform the industry by making U.S. manufacturers the most cybersecure in the world. Attacks will be increasingly focused at the advanced persistent threat or sabotage levels, in addition to IP theft and ransomware. The aim of these attacks is simple: disrupt our critical manufacturing ecosystem and undermine our economy. The stakes are very high.

Remember The Mobile Devices!

Mobile devices are a serious risk to your organization. A group of researchers found that iPhones are susceptible to an attack that can install malware on the device without the user doing anything. The phone doesn’t even need to be on. Furthermore, this flaw is present in the device’s hardware, meaning it can’t be fixed by a software update!

Many small and medium business owners still believe that as long as they have network firewall, anti-virus and some employee trainings then they're protected. Well, Microsoft, Samsung, NVIDIA and many other tech giants have those too, but they have been recently hacked:

Microsoft

Samsung

Nvidia

The modern threat landscape is ever evolving, and hackers are getting smarter and smarter every day. Fileless malware and zero-day attacks are just a few that makes traditional firewall and anti-virus become ineffective.

The most effective forms of protection for this kind of cyberattacks are Artificial Intelligence based Endpoint Security and Advanced Threat Prevention with 24/7 continuous monitoring, rapid detection, and effective remediation by a Security Operations Center (SOC) team.

The issue is, how small and medium businesses could do continuous cyber threat monitoring, rapid detection, and effective remediation in a way that is both practical and affordable?

Cybersecurity researchers reported that there were 623 million ransomware attacks, or a 1.7 million attacks per day - a growth of 105% globally in 2021.

The number of attacks only grew as cyber criminals continue to take advantage of the poor level of cybersecurity awareness by many organizations' employees. In the first quarter of 2022 alone, several giant enterprises including Microsoft, Samsung, Nvidia and two of Toyota suppliers Denso Corp and Bridgestone Americas have been hit by cyberattacks.

Here's the bad news: things are likely to get even worse unless we do something about it. On March 21, President Joe Biden urged business leaders to harden cyber defenses immediately based on evolving intelligence that the Russian Government is exploring options for potential cyberattacks against the U.S. private sectors.

Every organization — large and small — must be prepared to respond to disruptive cyber incidents. In fact, small businesses are ideal target for hackers because of their lack of resources and security expertise.

The Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has prepared a mitigation guidance to help protect cyber systems and networks. If you're a startup or small business owner and need help to implement the guidance, don't hesitate to contact Liberty Cyber Solutions at [email protected]. We're committed to support locally owned startup and small businesses in Greater Houston to be prepared for, respond to, and mitigate the impact of cyberattacks.
