Search is splitting into two systems, and most businesses optimize for only one.

Traditional SEO still matters: rank on the page, earn clicks, build backlinks. But a growing share of searches now end inside an AI-generated answer before anyone ever sees a list of links.

Adobe's own research backs this up: generative-AI referral traffic grew more than 10x between July 2024 and February 2025, and that traffic converts better than the traffic you're used to.

AI-referred visitors browse 12% more pages and bounce 23% less.

Getting ranked and getting cited are different jobs, and they're won with different things: clear structure, real credibility, and third-party mentions carry more weight than keywords ever did.

The businesses that show up in both are the ones treating this as an expansion of SEO, not a replacement.

AI chatbot use has just about doubled in two years.

Pew Research Center's newest report: 49% of U.S. adults now use AI chatbots, up from 33% in 2024 and just 23% in 2023. On top of that, 60% of U.S. adults now read AI-generated summaries in their search results.

This isn't a niche behavior anymore: it's mainstream, and it's compounding. Fast.

For multi-location and high-value service brands, that means visibility can't live in one channel. If AI Overviews, chatbots, and traditional search are all shaping how customers find you, showing up in only one of them means missing a growing share of the discovery moment.

Today's National Dog Day, and my owner Steve finally caved and let me start an account.
