This camera runs on a spring, and it still works a century later.
The Bell & Howell 204A 16mm video camera is at Electronic Parts Outlet in Houston right now, and if you’ve ever wanted to hold a piece of real motion-picture engineering, this is one worth seeing up close.
Bell & Howell introduced the first spring-driven 16mm camera in 1923. That Filmo lineage became the foundation for decades of cameras used by everyone from serious amateurs to combat cameramen and newsreel crews. The 204A uses a governor-controlled spring motor that delivers about 35 seconds of run time at 24 frames per second on a full wind, a fixed 204-degree shutter that lets in more light than a standard 180-degree design (making it a top competitor at its inception), and C-mount lenses that remain compatible with a surprising amount of modern industrial glass.
You set the frame rate, typically ranging from 8 to 64 frames per second, and the mechanism does the rest. There are no batteries and there are no chips or software. This is a piece of carefully engineered history that still works the way it was designed to nearly a century later.
For anyone into the physical side of image-making, this is the real thing. The whole process is right there in your hands.
All kinds of vintage finds just like this are in our store sitting around, waiting for you. Do not make them wait any longer than they need to!
