Armada is coming.

The first of our 78m remotely operated ships is now undergoing sea trials ahead of its remote system fitout. This ship is the first of 23, innovative low-emission vessels, set to transform operations at sea.

COP26 highlighted the huge task ahead in the battle against climate change. Businesses have a central role to play in protecting our planet. This is why we have made a commitment to be net zero carbon across the entire business by 2040, and carbon neutral across all vessel operations by 2027.

Our mission is to use innovative technology to transform operations at sea, to enable people and the planet to thrive. Innovating to find greener, cleaner, and safer ways of operating at sea has been the driving force behind our business since the very beginning. This ultimately led to the development of our hybrid fleet of uncrewed robotic ships. This is an incredibly positive step change for the industry, but it only touches the surface of what can and should be done to protect the planet for future generations. This is why we have set the following goals:

- Carbon neutral across scope 2 by 2023.

Our facilities and remote control centres will be powered using renewable energy.

- Carbon neutral across scope 1 by 2027.

We will transition away from using conventional vessels and replace them with our hybrid and blue/green ammonia powered Armada robotic ships.

- Carbon neutral across scope 3 by 2040.

Scope 3 emissions are the largest and the hardest to control. We are taking action to reduce emissions from all business activities, for example air travel, commuting, logistics and procurement.

Not only are we being accountable for our operations at sea, but we are changing how we act as a business to ensure that people and the planet remain at the heart of everything we do.

We believe that cross sector partnership is an essential part of achieving the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals. That is why we have partnered with the NTNU - Norwegian University of Science and Technology on a long-term programme of marine environmental scientific research.

Part of this partnership involved gathering biological samples, which contributed to providing a greater understanding of deep-sea ecosystems and the oceans. We fitted our vessels with biological sampling equipment and our Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) operators were trained by scientists from NTNU to ensure that data was gathered and stored in the best possible way. We are expanding on this project by using our robotic fleets to capture even more environmental data.

Gathering information in a sustainable technology driven way can play a major role in deepening our understanding of, and connection with, our oceans. The data gathered can be used to achieve change on a national and international level, by informing the academic and maritime industry.

As part of our efforts to restore and protect our planet, we've been working alongside Forest Carbon Ltd to support the restoration of just under 50 hectares of woodland in Scotland. That is about 74,000 trees!

The Ocean Infinity Woodland is an exciting project in the Scottish Borders with multi-functional aims. Some of the trees have been planted in strips across existing pastures, creating wildlife corridors, but also helping to shelter grazing livestock and encourage early grass growth in spring.

An area of native woodland is also being created to provide important upland habitat for local biodiversity and help reduce run-off down the hill during heavy rain.

In a different area of the forest, several areas of riparian woodland will be planted next to the Allan water, to stabilise the banks and provide shade in the summertime to keep the water cool enough for fish breeding populations.

As well as being a great space for wildlife and biodiversity to thrive, this site will sequester over 20,000 tCo2.

In September, we were awarded funding to develop a zero emission marine propulsion system. This project will see us develop an ammonia-based fuel cell system, a greener and cleaner replacement for traditional fuel.

We’re very proud that today, as part of COP26, this project is being showcased by the Department for Transport at the International Maritime Hub.

Currently, most ships are powered using fossil fuels which are responsible for high volumes of CO2 emissions. Directly targeting key elements of the UK Government’s 2050 Clean Maritime Plan, we along with our project partners, are introducing this innovative new technology for clean vessel propulsion, expecting to make a meaningful contribution towards the UK’s net-zero greenhouse gas commitment.

Waste on landfill sites is at risk of spilling into the ocean, causing water pollution and harm to the marine life that inhabits it. These sites are damaging to the planet and will always remain a major environmental hazard unless we reduce consumption and embrace new, innovative ways of handling waste.

Introducing…. Advetec Group. Advetec have revolutionised waste handling through the creation of aerobic waste reduction technology that prevents waste going to landfill and drastically reduces emissions.

We are thrilled to have an Advetec unit at our new site in Southampton and one on its way to our offshore vessel, the Island Pride.

Find out more about Advetec’s work by visiting their website: https://www.advetec.com/the-environment/

In 2020, we introduced Ocean Bottle onto our conventional vessels to reduce single use plastic onboard. Each refillable water bottle funds the collection of the equivalent to 1,000 plastic bottles. In 2020, we ordered 360 bottles for the three vessels that we had at the time. That equates to the collection of approximately 360,000 plastic bottles.

As we continue to rapidly grow as an organization, we will continue to support cleaning the oceans of single use plastic by rolling this initiative across all our vessels. If you haven't done so yet, check out
Ocean Bottle to see all the amazing work they are doing.

We believe that cross partnership is a fundamental part of successfully taking action against .

In 2019 we partnered with leading scientists from across the globe to investigate the impact that climate change was having on the environment in Antarctica. The focus of the Weddell Sea expedition was the scientific investigation of the Larsen C Ice Shelf in the Weddell Sea. Our Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) and Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) technology enabled measurement of a range of important physical and biological parameters beneath the ice shelf and the sea-ice. The data collected provided information on the little-studied biological systems of this extreme environment, and together with above-ice measurements, contributed to the understanding of sea-ice conditions in the Weddell Sea and the implications for ocean currents and climate change.
