Real Attacks on Small Organizations: No business is too small to be targeted.

Nearly 43% of cyber attacks now target small businesses, yet only ~14% of SMBs feel prepared to defend against them. In 2024, over 5,200 organizations (many SMBs) had their data posted on hacker leak sites – a stark reminder that cybercriminals cast a wide net.

Why it matters: Limited IT staff or budget doesn’t spare a company from breaches. In one case, thieves used stolen passwords to access a cloud database service (Snowflake), breaching 165 companies’ data and extorting them.

➡️ Tip: Assume you are a target. Strengthen basic defenses and have a response plan – it’s not “if” but “when” for attacks.

Edge Vulnerabilities

Insecure edge devices are major weak points. Router/VPN flaws are being exploited as easy entry points – over 200,000 small office devices were hijacked into botnets like “Raptor” this year.

Why it matters: SMBs increasingly rely on cloud services and Internet-connected devices, but a single unpatched vulnerability can open the door to attackers.

➡️ Tip: Regularly audit cloud settings (access controls, storage permissions) and keep all network gear (routers, IoT, firewalls) updated and patched.

Ransomware’s New Extortion Tactics: Ransomware gangs now favor data extortion over encryption

Instead of just locking files, they steal sensitive data and threaten to leak it – pressuring businesses to pay even without “ransomware” malware. This streamlined tactic boosts criminal payouts.

Why it matters: Even with good backups, small businesses risk privacy breaches and reputational damage.

Tip: Protect confidential data – encrypt it, restrict access – and have an incident response plan for data leaks.

The Rise of Infostealer Malware

Infostealers have exploded, up 58% in 2024. These stealthy programs steal passwords, cookies, and data – often from personal devices. (Over 70% of infected devices were employee-owned BYOD gear.

Why it matters: One stolen login can let hackers infiltrate a small firm’s network.

HOW AI INCREASES SECURITY EFFICIENCY

In cyber security, one of the foundational tasks consists of parsing apart patterns and filtering out irrelevant information. This type of manual work takes up a lot of time and can be relentlessly dull, especially when relying on tools with questionable levels of accuracy.

The signs of a cyber threat can be extremely subtle. And a human analyst who isn’t actively and rigorously looking for threats is almost like having a friendly Golden Retriever as a sentry—eager, but liable to let the bad guys in.

WIRED reviewed Gabbard's passwords using databases of material leaked online created by the open-source intelligence firms District4Labs and Constella Intelligence.

Gabbard served in Congress from 2013 to 2021, during which time she sat on the Armed Services Committee, its Subcommittee on Intelligence and Special Operations, and the Foreign Affairs Committee, giving her access to sensitive information.

Material from breaches shows that during a portion of this period, she used the same password across multiple email addresses and online accounts, in contravention of well-established best practices for online security.

Now the US director of national intelligence, Gabbard failed to follow basic cybersecurity practices on several of her personal accounts, leaked records reviewed by WIRED reveal.

How AI Can Help SMBs Overcome Today’s Cybersecurity Challenges

For small and mid-sized businesses, staying ahead of cyber threats can feel overwhelming—especially with limited resources and growing digital demands. AI-powered cybersecurity solutions offer a smarter, more efficient way to protect your business without overburdening your team.

Here’s how AI can make a difference for SMBs:

Cut Through the Noise: Security alerts can pile up fast, and it’s easy to miss real threats in the chaos. AI helps by automatically filtering and prioritizing alerts, so your team can focus on what truly matters—keeping your business safe.

Stay Ahead of Evolving Threats: With 93% of security professionals expecting AI-driven attacks to rise, SMBs need to be proactive. AI gives you the tools to detect and respond to these advanced threats before they cause damage.

Simplify Your Security Stack: Many SMBs rely on a mix of tools from different vendors, which can be hard to manage. AI can bring these systems together, giving you a clearer view of your security posture and helping you respond faster.

Bridge the Skills Gap: Hiring and retaining cybersecurity talent is tough—especially for smaller teams. AI acts as a force multiplier, automating routine tasks and helping your existing staff do more with less.

With AI, you don’t need a large security team or a big budget to stay protected. You just need the right technology working for you.

Gmail users are being issued a stark warning about a new and highly sophisticated scam that employs artificial intelligence (AI) to deceive users into divulging personal information, putting their accounts and sensitive data at serious risk.

The attack is a part of a rising wave of AI-driven fraud schemes that experts say are becoming increasingly difficult to identify, which makes it essential for users to stay vigilant.

Scammers are once again using AI to take over Gmail accounts.
