Two sides of the same coin - an age old addage when two seemingly opposite truths are actually related.

Design is the craft of reconciling opposites:

Form vs function

Creativity vs constraint

Simplicity vs depth

Consistency vs evolution

Vision vs goals

Trend vs timelessness

Emotion vs logic

Order vs disruption

Details vs big picture

Visibility vs invisibility

The difference between pro and amateur is knowing it's not about flipping the coin and committing to the winning side, but finding the harmonies and balance to satisfy both truths to make a stronger design.

As a professional graphic designer, evolving your past work can be a tall task.

The season of change is upon us, and as readies for its second edition print run and beyond, these are the last moments I get to spend with one of the first major milestones completed to bring this ever expanding strategy card game to life.

Not to be too nostalgic about it, but opening the files again was like catching up with an old friend. The places we've been, the things we've experienced and how we've grown since we last caught up will all go into the evolution of box art 2.0.

While the design is not entirely changing, when you've seen something you've created in one certain way for so long, it can be an incredibly high bar to alter and evolve it into its next phase of existence.

Work is well under way and I feel both box art will keep a snug fit deep in my heart. I cannot wait to share more of the next chapters ahead. The mad duo at are cooking up very cool things that I cannot wait to put my creative mind to work on.

If you're new, or seeking some adventure of your own, X: Seekers of Fortune is a strategy card game that pits you and a rival in a race for fortune and glory in a storied universe as you romp through the desert chasing an ancient and powerful relic lost to sand and time. There's something quietly radical about Spring.

It begins invisibly beneath the surface, roots spread and meander through thawed soil, seeds split and a symphony of systems begin to reorganize. Nothing looks different at first, which is why the season is so deceptive.

A reminder that change is rarely announced. It is prepared in private long before its effects are visible.

Change, not for the sake of becoming something new, but for growth and growing into something bolder, louder, brighter.

Telling stories through design is not always saying something new, it's framing what is or what was in a way that lets the colors burst through. It's arranging facts and details and the chaos of life into a semblance of structure or order that lets the subject speak loud, but always in its own voice.

An end product where the subject does not need to ask permission for attention or existence - it insists, it commands, and it flourishes.

What have you been growing, toiling away at, or dreaming into existence recently? Let me help you race hearts and stop scrolls. Tell me everything.

The two things you need to be an adventurer: a killer hat and damn good instructions.

As a graphic designer, tabletop game instructions are a hallway of tripwires and sinking tiles that trigger poisonous darts.

They are a fine, fine line of description, storytelling, and, of course, instructions.

Here's the mission: Sum up the game, its pieces, its mechanics, and its rules, show examples of what you mean for extra clarity, terminology and phrasing needs to exactly match messaging elsewhere, and tell a story to introduce new players into the universe. Oh, and, attention spans are more brief than ever, so do all of this as succinctly as possible.

Don't get me wrong, it was a fun mission, a great one in fact, but it was a challenge turning dials ever so slightly, leaning in and really focusing in on what the document needed and cutting mercilessly everything that it didn't.

The client feedback when the dust settled: "These are game instructions that would win awards."

The feedback from players of X:Seekers of Fortune: "Premium", "High-quality", "Great examples", "Very easy to sit and down and pick up and play".

Mission accomplished.

Tour de Houston isn't a cycling race, but take a look at the rows and rows of participants on the starting line on event day and tell me these aren't riders who take cycling seriously.

Suited up, kitted out, game faces on. This multi-length annual event brings out riders of every skill level - fresh off the training wheels to weekend pavement thrashers.

In 2025, when tasked with creating a new logo for the event, I kept all of this mind. This event needed a logo that was fun and authentically Houston and needed to wrangle in some loose elements such as the City Seal and a headline sponsor placement.

Mockups of stickers, jerseys, helmets, and signage helped make sense of how the two versions of the logo could work and pairing them with visuals of intense and fearless riders ready to take on the challenge - suited up like astronauts with stars and light streaks streaming overhead - helped check the boxes for appealing to both the aspiring and the seasoned rider.

Creating Matrix themed wallpapers was one of the first "projects" I ever tackled when I first got my hands on a copy of Photoshop. How fun to bring it full circle years later in support of Comicpalooza 😎

Movie magic always mystified me. It is what inspired me to become a graphic designer.

The artistry and creative expression of compositing elements together to make something wholly fiction into a believable frame.

Escapism, storytelling, or just pure summer box office fun, it lets us walk with dinosaurs (or run from them), take a trip to the stars, or relive a pivotal moment from history.

This year with be my tenth supporting Comicpalooza. CP is a annual pop culture convention in Houston that ttracts tens of thousands each summer - for many, it's not just an event, but a tradition.

From advertisements and stage graphics, to merchandise and apparel, I get to touch and shape almost every visual element of the event.

Over the the decade, CP is where I got practice with adding explosions and sparks, lightning bolts, fire and smoke, and a handful of other practical effects that made my eyes go wide sitting in theaters as a kid.

Comicpalooza is also where I've had the chance to dabble in the universes of my favorite movies, comic books, and superheroes. From Marvel's movie franchises to Game of Thrones to Star Wars to Aliens; CP is where I've had the opportunity to put my finger on the pulse of some of the biggest entertainment brands around.

Every year it is so much fun to see attendees enjoying my work, big or small, as part of their experience - whether it's killer collectable lapel pins, rad t-shirt designs, or even the more mundane way finding and event signage - the experience is in the details and even the details get that special dose of passion.

There could always be nothing.

Graphic designers have a sacred responsibility and ability - there could always be nothing.

Clients hire us because something is needed to be crafted. Something willed into existence from the ether.

Instead of nothing we produce an outcome; an emotional experience; a factual recount; a look into another universe; an escape from time itself.

Through these projects we inspire, we instill awe, we make people stop and think. The butterfly ripple effect of that moment can be profound. So when you make something, why not make it great?

In the timeframe and on the budget, make it all that it can be, because there could always be nothing.

A strategy card game that doesn't pick your pocket, that doesn't hex you a slow death with endless convoluted instructions, that is easy to pick up and play - yet rewarding for those who love seeking strategy, whose every component could be described as "high-quality", "above industry standard", "quality I've never seen before" (see the reviews and unboxings), and an ever-expanding game with even more fun on the horizon.

This isn't ink, glue, and paper, this is a whole lotta love stuffed into a -finely designed- box.
