Ubuntu Linux Lands on Intel Compute Stick

Full Linux operating system comes to portable Intel device platform.

Ubuntu Linux is widely deployed on desktops, servers and clouds around the world, and now it's coming to Intel's Compute Stick platform as well.

The Intel Compute Stick is a small form factor device, powered by a quad-core Intel Atom processor, Intel Compute Stick that includes a USB port and a micro-SD card slot. The promise of the Intel Compute Stick is that it can plug into any HDMI TV and turn it into a full computing device.

The Intel Compute stick first launched with Microsoft Windows 8.1, and now it's getting Ubuntu Linux.

It's not entirely clear what financial arrangement are in place between Intel and Canonical, the lead commercial sponsor behind Ubuntu, that led to Ubuntu landing on the Compute Stick platform.

Mark Murphy, Director of Devices Sales and Global Alliances at Canonical, told ServerWatch that his company doesn't comment on commercial arrangements with its partners.

The Intel Compute Stick will be using the older Ubuntu 14.04 LTS distribution and not the newer Ubuntu 15.04 release. Ubuntu 15.04 is noteworthy in many respects, including its addition of the Snappy Ubuntu technology, which provides transactional updates and a more optimized minimal system footprint.

Canonical is working with networking vendors to implement Snappy on networking hardware and with General Electric (GE) for inclusion in Internet of Things (IoT) devices, including refrigerators.

Murphy commented that Ubuntu 14.04 LTS is Canonical's base platform for its OEM partners, as it is supported for 5 years from the release date.

Even though the Intel Compute Stick is x86 based, which is an architecture that Ubuntu has supported since day one, Canonical still had to do some engineering work.

"OEM enablement involves a great deal of engineering collaboration with specific component vendors, ODMs and OEMs - delivering all the major benefits of factory-level quality assurance standards, full support, tight integration with BIOS, component integration and board-level certification," Murphy said.

In July of 2006, I first wrote about Google Code, as a new competitive alternative to SourceForge for open-source project hosting. Times sure have changed in the last 8.5 years and Google is now shutting Google Code down.

The writing has been on the wall for nearly two years about Google Code's fate, so theGoogle Code move shouldn't be much of a surprise.

In May 2013, Google shut down Google Code Download services. At the time, I thought that it made no sense, after all what good is a code repository when developers can't use the service to enable binary downloads?

It wasn't Google shooting itself in the foot that is the prime cause of Google Code's demise, but rather the extreme success of Github.

Nearly every major interesting open-source project that I'm aware of is now using Github. Github isn't just a place to download files (you can still use Sourceforge for that), it has become a fantastic and integral part of the development process in a way that neither Sourceforge nor Google Code ever truly offered or enabled.

"To meet developers where they are, we ourselves migrated nearly a thousand of our own open source projects from Google Code to GitHub," Google's Open-Source leader Chris DiBona wrote. "As developers migrated away from Google Code, a growing share of the remaining projects were spam or abuse. After profiling non-abusive activity on Google Code, it has become clear to us that the service simply isn’t needed anymore."

The end of Google Code is coming in a timed approach. As of March 12, all new project creation has been disabled. On August 24, the site goes read-only and the site will effectively disappear on January 25, 2016.

A Seattle, Washington-based bar, 5 Point Café, has already banned Google Glass, the search engine giant's augmented reality specs donning a front-facing camera. The owner has taken to the bar's page to state that "ass kickings will be encouraged for violators", and has undoubtedly become one of many to outlaw the specs in fear of privacy concerns.

“I’m a thought leader,” said 5 Point Café owner Dave Meinert. "First you have to understand the culture of the 5 Point, which is a sometimes seedy, maybe notorious place. People want to go there and be not known … and definitely don’t want to be secretly filmed or videotaped and immediately put on the Internet."

He added that the Facebook warning was partly a joke to get a reaction. But he's also serious about the Glass ban, as the bar already doesn't allow people to film or take pictures under its roof. They're unwanted, he said, and that the bar is a private place that people visit.

"It’s OK if you wear them, I just don’t want them worn inside," he added, acknowledging all the "tech geeks" that wander in from nearby Amazon offices.

Meanwhile, a Google Glass developer kit has landed on eBay, costing a rather hefty $8201 USD. Naturally the seller is banking on the inability to purchase the specs until (possibly) later this year for around $1500 USD, and has already reeled in 36 bids. The listing is based out of Russia and sports a "tangerine" model that was likely acquired through one of the Glass Foundry development workshops.

"This is a new product, but the box a little crumpled in transit," the listing reads. "This item does not cost $ 80! If you want to buy, you have to pay $ 8000! Russia to limit sales in the month. I can not sell the product for more than $ 80. If you want to buy the product now, then you have to pay $ 8,000 or to participate in the auction. In the presence of two sets of glass Google."

The seller currently has a 100-percent positive feedback, so it's possible the lucky customer will receive the real deal. But there's no indication how "izoterika" acquired the specs, or if they even work at all (could be defective units thrown in the trash). That said, interested customers may want to wait until Google coughs up the actual product later this year.

Still, the auction ends on March 13 for anyone willing to gamble over $8000!

Competing with the Surface
Google and an unnamed manufacturer are developing a touchscreen-enabled Chromebook for launch in 2013, according to the Wall Street Journal.?

The new report lines up nicely with a fairly sketchy, leaked video earlier this month that gave an overview of a touchscren Chromebook and suggested it was designed in-house. The Wall Street Journal wasn't able to provide any specifics in-terms of specifications, except that Google may be making the new laptop/tablet hybrid in a move to compete with Microsoft's Windows 8.??

Developer Francois Beaufort leaked the video earlier this month that highlighted a Chromebook with a full touchscreen display running at an impressive 2560x1700 resolution. There was also word that it would be dubbed the "Google Link."

The video was a little suspect, as it was created by marketing firm Slink.me, not Google itself. Shortly after the video leaked, CEO Victor Koch took to Google Plus to say the company's servers had been attacked by hackers. It's not clear if Google licensed the company for marketing work, or if Slink.me took it upon themselves to make an unofficial mock-up.?

Priced between $199 to $250, previous Chromebook models by Samsung, Acer, and now HP have been lower-spec'd, carrying a lower price for entry level customers who aren't looking to spend a lot of money on a laptop. A price for the supposed touchscreen laptop hasn't been detailed. but we suspect it'd be a little hire.??

Could this be the Nexus Chromebook that Google may want to show off at its new retail stores? We've reached out to the Mountain View-based company in hopes of learning more.
