VLAN Explained — Segment Your Network Like a Network Engineer

A VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) allows you to divide one physical switch into multiple logical networks. This improves security, reduces unnecessary broadcast traffic, and makes the network easier to manage.

In this example:

🔹 VLAN 10 — IT Department
🔹 VLAN 20 — Sales Department
🔹 Devices in the same VLAN can communicate directly
🔹 Devices in different VLANs are separated
🔹 Inter-VLAN Routing is required for communication between VLAN 10 and VLAN 20
🔹 A router or Layer 3 switch can perform that routing
🔹 Access ports connect end devices to their assigned VLANs
🔹 Trunk links can carry traffic for multiple VLANs
