Tech Tip Tuesday: Audit Third-Party App Access to Your Accounts
Many business applications request permission to access email, cloud storage, or other accounts "for convenience." These permissions should be reviewed periodically to remove access for unused applications.
Review app permissions:
Gmail/Google Workspace:
-Go to myaccount.google.com → Security
-Click Third-party apps with account access
-Review each app and remove unnecessary access
Microsoft 365:
-Go to account.microsoft.com → Security
-Click App permissions
-Remove unused apps
Apple ID:
-Go to appleid.apple.com
-Sign in → Security → Apps and websites
-Remove unnecessary access
Why it matters:
Applications often request broad permissions that exceed their actual need. An app may request email access when it only needs to send notification emails. A tool may request calendar access when it only needs to read availability.
These permissions remain active until explicitly revoked. If an app is no longer used, its access should be removed to reduce security surface area. Compromised third-party applications could provide attackers access to your email, files, or other connected services.
Review connected apps quarterly. Remove access for applications no longer in use. Verify that active applications still require the permissions they were granted.
This prevents unnecessary account access and reduces risk if third-party applications are compromised.
