I learned a new term today. Sealioning: A form of manipulation where someone pursues people with relentless, disingenuous requests for evidence or answers, masking their harassment as a sincere desire to learn.

As a business owner, customer satisfaction is of utmost importance. We go above and beyond to take care of our clients and it shows in everything we do. That said, what I will not tolerate is someone with a manipulative strategy to win by wearing me down. They are banking on the fact that I will eventually get so exhausted by the repetition that I will give them the answer they want just to make it stop.

Welcome back to another edition of Weird Noise Wednesday! This week, we investigated a 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 with 50,000 miles that came into the shop.

𝑻𝒉𝒆 π‘Ίπ’šπ’Žπ’‘π’•π’π’Žπ’”:

A mysterious clanking noise coming from the undercarriage.
A noticeable "pull" when hitting the brakes.

𝑻𝒉𝒆 π‘«π’Šπ’‚π’ˆπ’π’π’”π’Šπ’”:
Once we got the car up in the air and started tracing the sound, the culprit was clear as day: lloose hardware on the lower control arm (specifically, the forward control arm link).

π‘Ύπ’‰π’š π’Šπ’• 𝑴𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒔:
We don't see this one too often, but it's a massive deal. Here is exactly what happens when that hardware is left loose:

π‘¨π’π’Šπ’ˆπ’π’Žπ’†π’π’• 𝑰𝒔𝒔𝒖𝒆𝒔: Hitting the brakes throws the suspension completely out of alignment, causing the vehicle to yank to one side.

𝑴𝒂𝒋𝒐𝒓 π‘Ίπ’‚π’‡π’†π’•π’š 𝑯𝒂𝒛𝒂𝒓𝒅: If that nut were to vibrate loose and fall off completely while driving, it would be a catastrophic safety risk.

Weird Noise Wednesday: The "Slight" Rattle πŸš—πŸ”§

Welcome to another Weird Noise Wednesday! Today's feature is a 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC300 that found its way onto the shop lift.

The customer brought the car in and reported the following issues:

The vehicle pulls to the left when the brakes are applied.
There is a "slight rattle noise" when driving over bumps.

πŸš— π‘Ύπ’†π’Šπ’“π’… π‘΅π’π’Šπ’”π’† π‘Ύπ’†π’…π’π’†π’”π’…π’‚π’š: The Reveal! (a little late) πŸš—

Did you guess the source of that awful clunking and popping? If you guessed bad tie rods, you were spot onβ€”but unfortunately, the story doesn't end there.

Here is what happens when a "weird noise" gets ignored for a little too long:

𝑻𝒉𝒆 π‘ͺπ’–π’π’‘π’“π’Šπ’•: The inner and outer tie rods were completely worn out, which is what was making all that racket.

𝑻𝒉𝒆 π‘«π’π’Žπ’Šπ’π’ 𝑬𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒄𝒕: Because these tie rods were left unrepaired for an extended period, the excessive play, slop, and vibration traveled straight up the steering system. This ultimately caused terminal damage to the rack and pinion.

𝑻𝒉𝒆 π‘­π’Šπ’™: To get this vehicle safe, tight, and roadworthy again, we replaced the entire rack and pinion assembly alongside brand new inner and outer tie rods. We finished it all off with a precise four-wheel alignment so it drives straight and true.

𝑻𝒉𝒆 π‘»π’†π’„π’‰π’π’Šπ’„π’Šπ’‚π’ π‘»π’‚π’Œπ’†π’‚π’˜π’‚π’š: Your vehicle's steering and suspension parts work as a team. When one part fails and goes unchecked, it forces the rest of the system to take a massive beating.

What could have been a quick and relatively inexpensive tie rod replacement turned into a major steering system overhaul. Remember: if your car starts speaking to you in clunks, squeaks, or pops, bring it in early!
