A North Carolina man has been charged in a major music streaming fraud case involving artificial intelligence. Prosecutors say he used AI tools to generate hundreds of thousands of songs, uploaded them to streaming platforms, and then relied on automated programs to play the tracks billions of times. The fake activity made it appear as though real listeners were tuning in, allowing him to collect more than $10 million in royalties that should have gone to actual artists.
Federal authorities charged him with wire fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and money laundering conspiracy, with each count carrying a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison. The case underscores a growing challenge for digital platforms as low cost content creation and automation strain systems built on trust, raising urgent questions about how to distinguish genuine demand from artificial engagement as AI generated music becomes more accessible.
