This is the 4th amp I built, and the one that push me to start Resident Noise. Based on the Fender Bassman AA864 circuit, I have been using this while playing with since 2018. This amp remained unfinished cosmetically until this year, so naturally people assumed I made it and started asking me to fix their amplifiers. There appeared to be a need for this service in Ithaca and the surrounding area, so I officially started Resisent Noise in August of 2018.

This amp has had various modifications over the years, and is now a blend of the original circuit, the Fender Bandmaster 6G7 and the Fender Bassman 6G6. Still in use today for Chimes shows and recordings. Inspired by the amp used by Steve Albini for Shellac of North America.

Resident Noise has been a part time endeavor for me since 2018, so it’s been hard to balance the repair work that comes in each week with custom orders, which typically get put on the back burner. As of mid October Resident Noise is my full time job, so hopefully my turn around time will be faster and I’ll be able to do more custom work.

‘62 Bandmaster 6G7-A vs ‘64 Bassman 6G6-C. Hard to decide which one sounds better. Always fun to play through an amp that was used by Pete Townsend at one point in his career. Eddie Van Halen used this model bandmaster to write the early Van Halen records.

Sitting here listening to the first Shellac album I purchased trying to process the sad news about Steve Albini, a person that has had an immense impact on my life.

I hunted for a Travis Bean in 2003 because he played one in Shellac. Eventually I would build this amp, my 4th build, which is based on the 63 black panel Fender Bassman, the amp Steve used in Shellac. I began using this at shows in 2018, and it begin obvious that I built this, people started asking me about it and if I would work on their amplifiers. Resident Noise would not be here without people like Steve. A huge loss that will be felt for a long time.

Cornell students are joining the cause, calling for the university to divest from genocide in Gaza. They are risking suspension and arrest, all for supporting peace. Support them if you can, their camp will need food and water and the students may need legal help.

A bit of Ithaca area repair history that I’m just discovering. John “Dawk” Stillwell was a local electrical engineering from Freeville who worked with bands Manowar and Black Sabbath. He passed in 2015, 3 years before I opened up. Another reminder that a lot of the gear I work on will still be in use after I’m gone, as long as it’s taken care of properly.
