Community E-Waste Disposal Events Collect 10 Tons of E-Waste,
Demonstrating Great Need for E-Waste Events Across Mississippi

(Jackson, MS)
Two days of E-Waste disposal events resulted in 10 tons of discarded electronic devices—e-waste—that NexTech could properly recycle.
On International E-Waste Day in October and American Recycles Day in November, NexTech and Renaissance at Colony Park hosted E-waste disposal events. These events allowed residents to responsibly dispose of their end-of-life or discarded electronics, such as laptops, personal computers, monitors, televisions, cell phones, printers, scanners, cords, etc.
Beth Savage Zito, Director of Business Development, said, “We are here to help our communities responsibly and securely dispose of their E-Waste with our certified sustainable reuse, recovery, and recycling processes. Corporations hire out services for managing their E-Waste, but residents struggle to find a way to dispose of their personal E-Waste. We are part of the E-Waste solution.”
E-waste is America's fastest-growing municipal waste stream but has less than an 18% recycling rate because people do not know what to do with it. They know they should not throw it into the trash because it contains personal data and contaminants that are harmful to the environment, so they put it in drawers, attics, and garages, waiting for a way to dispose of it properly. With our growing digital economy comes stockpiling of E-Waste, a problem that will only grow.
E-Waste disposal events aim to raise awareness about the critical nature of E-Waste disposal, prevention of environmental contamination, protection of personal data, and the transition to a Circular Economy by using secure, sustainable IT disposal practices. Events bring knowledge and resources to residents who may be unaware of the correct methods for disposing of E-Waste and who have limited resources for disposal services. Disposing of E-Waste is a vast and ever-growing challenge, and disposal methods are not equal and can even be harmful if not handled properly. NexTech, an R2V3-certified company, meets the highest standards of e-waste disposal in any industry, complying with local, state, federal, and industry regulations.
E-waste events can be held across the state. If your organization would like to sponsor an
E-waste disposal event, please get in touch with Beth Zito at [email protected].
About E-Waste
E-waste is discarded electronics, including TVs, computers, peripherals (printers, scanners, fax machines, copiers, mice, keyboards), cell phones, household appliances, devices, etc. Representing 2% of America’s trash in landfills, E-Waste equals 70% of overall toxic waste because of the hazardous materials it contains. It is a vast and ever-growing problem. Unaware of a solution for disposing of old electronics, people keep and sit for years – to the tune of 42 pounds of E-Waste produced by each person annually, which equals nearly 12 million pounds in the United States. Less than 20% of E-Waste is recycled, meaning tons of toxic E-Waste are improperly disposed of, negatively impacting the environment by contaminating the air, water, and land. Both of these problems – data breaches and contamination – can be easily avoided by simply taking E-Waste to a certified recycling facility.
