Scarcely 160 years ago, Jackson Hole, Wyoming was home throughout the summer and fall seasons only to small bands of Native Americans and a few fur trappers. Later, the trappers and Indians were replaced by homesteaders who managed to endure harsh winters here while raising beef cattle. But Jackson Hole's future ("hole" was trapper slang for a mountain valley) was determined when those homesteader

s realized that dudes (rancher slang for summer tourists) were easier to keep than cattle. Thus, dude ranches were established in the valley and quickly caught on as tourists made Jackson Hole their summer vacation destination.

Interesting Fact of the day: The Snake River!

The Snake is one of the Pacific Northwest’s largest rivers. It’s 1,078 miles long, and is the Columbia River’s biggest tributary, which in turn is the largest river in North America to empty into the Pacific.

This beautiful and majestic river starts right here in Wyoming in Yellowstone!

Millions of salmon were plentifully available when Lewis & Clark visited the area, which at the time was populated by the Nez Perce and Shoshones. In fact, the Snake got its name because Shoshone sign language was misunderstood by settlers, and the movements for basket-weaving were misinterpreted as a snake instead, as Yellowstone NP archives relate it.

A major feature of the river is Hell’s Canyon, most of which is inaccessible by road, and is on the Oregon-Idaho border. It plunges as far as one mile down and runs alongside Idaho’s Seven Devils Mountains range.

15 dams have been constructed along the Snake’s length, including the famous Jackson Lake Dam at Jackson Hole! The dam and Jackson Lake helps provide water stability to the Wyoming and Idaho area, especially for agricultural purposes.
