Backcountry Zero

Backcountry Zero Backcountry Zero is a community vision to reduce fatalities in the backcountry. BC Zero is a program of Teton County Search & Rescue.

Backcountry Zero is a four-season, cross-sport, community-led program created by the Teton County Search and Rescue Foundation (TCSARF) to inspire, educate, collaborate, and foster leadership in order to develop and heighten awareness for safer practices in the backcountry. Backcountry Zero aims to cultivate a culture among user groups with a common language of principles that guide safer, enhance

d decision-making and travel in the backcountry. These aims are accomplished by working with the community (guides, teachers, mentors, retailers) to create program touchpoints, and through crafting and implementing events, educational opportunities and workshops, granting programs, and shareable multimedia.

This workshop, new this year, was made just for YOU — the backcountry user who took their Avy I or II a few years ago and maybe let their WFR expire…

…The person who has Gaia on their phone but might not use it to its full potential. The one who always scans the forecast before heading out and does a beacon check with their crew…but might forget what nuances they’re actually looking for. The type who knows how to switch their beacon to search mode but hasn’t practiced a proper search in a while. Or…forgets what to do once the probe strikes and the airway is clear.

Join volunteers for this 2-hour hands-on, scenario-based workshop that will give your winter backcountry skills a tune up!

Stations will cover:

1. Tools for Planning a Tour w/ .johnston

2. Stages of a Rescue in Avalanche Terrain w/ and .drex

3. Wilderness Medicine and Incident Response w/

Hey Jackson, don’t miss this talk at WYSAW!

Sophia Schwartz—local freeski athlete, ski mountaineer, and community activist—will go deep into risk vs. reward in the mountains.

During her presentation, will explain how we get meaning from backcountry recreation even when it can be dangerous.

“Spending time sliding on snow can create joy, connection, and growth in our lives,” she says.

“Some of the meaning we get in the mountains is inherently tied to risks, yet some of it is not. The goal of this talk is to use meaning and purpose as a framework to assess how we spend time in the mountains and how to build healthy fulfillment both on and off the slopes.”

Sophia spent three years on the US Freestyle Mogul Team, boppin’ down bumps as a World Cup athlete and National Champion. She transitioned to big mountain skiing in 2017 to follow her love of storytelling in the mountains.

Sophia works on the admin team at Teton Physical Therapy & Rehab as well as a fitness coach for Parkinson’s patients through Rock Steady Boxing. Her favorite days are spent outside with friends and skiing with the Coombs Outdoors crew. Sophia is known for her kind smile and nerdy science facts.
