Today was a good reminder that sometimes the smallest issues cause the biggest headaches.

I was troubleshooting why a verification email from a new platform never arrived. Spam folder was empty. Google Workspace looked healthy. The website was working. DNS appeared fine at first glance.

After digging deeper, I found the root cause:

The domain had no MX records.

Without MX records, the internet doesn’t know where to deliver email for your domain. Everything looked normal on the surface, but inbound email delivery wasn’t properly configured.

While working through the issue, I also reviewed and verified:

MX Records
SPF Records
DKIM Authentication
DMARC Policy
Google Workspace Configuration
Cloudflare DNS Settings

The result? Email delivery was restored immediately, and all authentication checks now pass.

It’s a good example of why troubleshooting should always start with fundamentals. Sometimes the solution isn’t a complex firewall rule, advanced security setting, or software bug. Sometimes it’s a missing DNS record hiding in plain sight.

Every issue is an opportunity to learn something new, and today was a great reminder that the fundamentals matter.

You know…a password isn’t security.

I know that sounds strange coming from someone in IT.

A lot of people think security means:
🔒 Having a password
🔒 Having antivirus
🔒 Having a firewall

Those things matter, but they’re only pieces of a much larger picture.

The biggest security issue I see isn’t usually some sophisticated hacker sitting in a dark room.

It’s normal human behavior.

Using the same password on multiple accounts.
Clicking a link because it looked legitimate.
Assuming backups are working because nobody has checked them recently.
Giving every employee administrative access because it’s easier.

Technology failures are rarely caused by a single catastrophic event.

They’re usually caused by dozens of small decisions that seem harmless on their own.

Whether you’re running a business or managing technology at home, one of the best habits you can develop is asking:

“If this stopped working tomorrow, what would I do?”

Internet.
Email.
Phones.
Files.
Accounting software.
Customer records.

The answer to that question often reveals more about your technology readiness than any software ever will.

Something I’ve noticed lately…

A lot of business owners assume their technology setup is “fine” simply because nothing has broken yet.

Until:

• a hard drive dies

Quick thought from what I’ve been seeing lately 👇
