Full transparency: Sometimes even a tech gets "writer's block."

I was doing a job out at a farm installing point-to-point Wi-Fi extenders, and the project required an 80-foot Cat 6 ethernet cable. I have very little hands-on experience putting ends on a Cat 6. After spending hours fighting it with the improper equipment, I was desperate and willing to pay someone to get it done.

I called around and was told to ask for Jeremy at McLean’s Hardware. Jeremy has worked there for 28 years—which is a massive testament to how well Jodie and the crew treat their people. Just saying!

Jeremy went completely above and beyond. Not only did he get the ends on the first try, but he also took the time to show and explain his technique to me. I can't thank him enough. These guys aren't just helping me out; they are actively sending business to me here at Basic Communication Solutions.

Support locally owned businesses, especially the ones that support others. This community never stops amazing me if you know where to look.

Now, let's have some fun here in Kalkaska. Huge thanks as well to my Uncle Joe—the tall, bald guy who also works at McLean's. I'm putting a bounty out:

Anyone who comes into my store with a real $1 bill signed by Uncle Joe gets $5 in cash value to use in the store on the spot.

Game on. Sorry if this causes disruption Jodie!

S21 Screen Replacement!

A really good update on the gaming laptop kid.
He came in today (a full week early) because he was curious how it was going. No phone, so he just walked in to check on it. He had actually managed to come up with the money already and was ready to pay.
I fired the laptop up and showed him it was working. He got really excited. Then when he pulled out his wallet, I told him, “No sir… the community and I decided this one is on us.”
We both got a little teary-eyed for a second (but no crying… we’re men 😂).
He ended up buying two chargers from me while he was here, and then he turned around and donated a little bit back into the Elder Tech Fund on his own. We talked for a bit about paying it forward, and I told him I’d start showing him a few things about repairs in his free time if he’s interested.
I just wanted to say thank you again to everyone who said yes to this. Moments like today are exactly why I wanted to open this shop in the first place. This community continues to show up in ways that mean a lot.
Appreciate you all more than you know.

Question for the community — your money is involved.

A young kid came in today with a gaming laptop that needs work. He works a lot, doesn’t have a phone, and doesn’t get paid until next Friday. He didn’t ask me to do it for free. He didn’t ask for credit. He simply asked if I could hold onto it until he gets paid.
I really respect that.
I’ve been thinking about this all day. I have the Elder Tech Fund that this community has been so generous with — helping seniors afford the tech help they need. With your thoughts on it, I’d like to use a portion of that fund, along with my own time, to cover his repair.
He won’t see this post (he has no phone and his laptop is here), so this is truly between us. I just wanted to run it by the people who helped build that fund in the first place.
Would you be okay with me using some of it to help this kid out?
I’d really appreciate your honest feedback, Kalkaska.
