📖 What does it really mean for a city to be “smart”?
In Smart as a City: The Politics of Test‑Bed Urbanism, Dr. Burcu Baykurt takes us inside Kansas City, Missouri, offering a deeply researched, ethnographic look at how “smart city” technologies are experienced, negotiated, and contested by residents, civic leaders, and local entrepreneurs—not just sold by tech companies.
Rather than celebrating tech for tech’s sake, Baykurt reframes smartness as a collective, messy, and political process, showing how experimental urban technologies often arrive unfinished, imperfect, and entangled with existing inequalities.
This is essential reading for:
🏙️ City leaders & planners
📡 Digital equity advocates
🎓 Students of urban studies, media, and technology
🤝 Anyone working at the intersection of community, infrastructure, and innovation
Smart cities aren’t just built—they’re lived in.

One of our favorite Kansas City moments 💛
We had the honor of hosting 100 students from Missouri’s Bootheel right here in Kansas City, giving them a full‑spectrum experience of what STEM, culture, and community look like when they come together.
🎤 The students felt the positive hip‑hop energy of Just Wulf
🤖 Explored hands‑on robotics with Minnesota STEM partners
🧠 Connected with regional STEM practitioners and co‑founders of NSBE
⚾ And capped it all off with a Kansas City Royals game, catered by Brancato’s, showing true KC hospitality
This is what exposure looks like.
This is what opportunity feels like.
This is how futures get unlocked.

🔐 Every Home Is a Network. Every Network Needs a Defender.
Every cell phone, Smart TV, laptop, tablet, gaming console, and app in your home is like an open window to the internet.
If you don’t secure those windows, someone will try to climb through them.
📸 What you’re seeing here is just a snapshot — a 2‑minute window on a properly hardened home network.
In that short time:

🚫 Dozens of malicious connection attempts were blocked
🌍 Traffic was denied from devices across multiple countries
🛡️ Our edge router protected home computers, phones, and IoT devices automatically

This is not hypothetical. This is happening to homes every single day.

🧠 What This Screenshot Actually Means

🇺🇸🇨🇦🇬🇧🇩🇪🇧🇬🇯🇵🇨🇳🇧🇷
The flags represent countries where connection attempts originated
🔢 The IP address represents the external device attempting access
⏱️ The timestamps show how frequently your home is being probed
🔐 Every entry you see was denied access to our home and IoT devices

And this is with security turned on.
👉 The real question is: How secure is your network?

👨🏾‍💻 Why aSTEAM Village Teaches Kids to Defend the Home
At aSTEAM Village, we believe cybersecurity starts at home.
That’s why our students don’t just use technology — they learn to protect it.
Through the Cisco Networking Academy and the RedTails TechFORCE Initiative, our youth and trained techs learn how to:

✅ Harden home and small‑business networks
✅ Secure Wi‑Fi, routers, and IoT devices
✅ Detect and block malicious traffic
✅ Build real‑world cybersecurity skills that lead to careers

This isn’t theory.
This is hands‑on, real‑world network defense.

🏠 For Families. ⛪ For Churches. 🏢 For Small Organizations.
We’re now accepting client requests for network hardening services performed by:

✅ Trained aSTEAM Village Techs
✅ Supervised by certified professionals
✅ Aligned with Cisco Networking Academy standards

Whether it’s your:

Home network
Church
Nonprofit
Small business
Community center

We help you lock the digital doors.

🚀 Join the Movement
🔹 Want your home network assessed?

🌟 CEED Summit III Featured Speaker Announcement
Dr. Louis Pa**lo
Architect of the Minority Engineering Movement
We are honored to announce Dr. Louis Pa**lo as a Featured Speaker at CEED Summit III, bringing with him a legacy that helped shape the national movement to expand access and opportunity for minorities and women in engineering and STEM. [DrPa**loPressRelease | PDF]
📍 CEED Summit III
🗓 Opening Session
🏛 Centennial United Methodist Church

🧠 About the Speaker
Dr. Louis Pa**lo is widely regarded as one of the architects of the modern minority engineering ecosystem. Over a distinguished career spanning more than six decades, he has served as a professor, department chair, dean, university president, and chief executive, using positions of institutional leadership to build durable, systems‑level pathways into engineering and science for underrepresented communities. [DrPa**loPressRelease | PDF]
His work helped lay the groundwork for:

National strategies to expand minority participation in engineering
Graduate education pipelines, including GEM and other landmark initiatives
Dual‑degree engineering partnerships between HBCUs and major research universities
The foundational thinking that influenced organizations such as NSBE and national engineering policy bodies [Historic I...Movement 1 | Loop]

📚 Why His Voice Matters at CEED Summit III
Dr. Pa**lo’s contributions go far beyond individual mentorship. As a chair and contributor to landmark national commissions and reports on minority participation in engineering, he helped introduce systems‑thinking concepts—such as the “engineering pipeline”—that reframed how institutions understood access, attrition, and opportunity in STEM education. [Historic I...Movement 1 | Loop]
His work reminds us that:

Equity requires intentional system design, not just goodwill
Talent exists everywhere, but opportunity does not
Institutions—not individuals—must change to unlock generational progress

These lessons align directly with CEED Summit III’s focus on community engagement, empowerment, and development across generations.

🎤 What to Expect
At CEED Summit III, Dr. Pa**lo will reflect on:

The behind‑the‑scenes history of the minority engineering movement
How policy, philanthropy, academia, and industry intersected to create lasting change
What today’s community leaders, educators, and technologists must do to build equitable pathways forward

This is a rare opportunity to hear from a leader whose work shaped national outcomes—and whose insights remain deeply relevant today.
