That sums up the new Hunter Amplifiers ๐——๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐˜๐˜† ๐——๐—ฒ๐—Ÿ๐˜‚๐˜…๐—ฒ ๐Ÿฑ๐—˜๐Ÿฏ+. None of the circuit concepts here are original to me. The foundation is straight off Leo Fenderโ€™s classic 5E3 schematic, and practically all the rest comes directly from Rob Robinetteโ€™s 5E3 modifications and analysis. What makes this build unique is having this specific suite of mods integrated into a single, cohesive build.

Meet the Hunter Amplifiers 2-Face Champ! ๐Ÿ†

Bob took the basic single-ended Champ recipe and gave it two independently switchable stages that let you move between 5F1 Tweed and AA764 Black Panel behavior, or mix the two together.

One switch changes the first gain stage and signal path: straight into the next stage for raw Tweed drive, or through the tone stack for the cleaner, scooped Black Panel sound.

The second changes the bias structure and negative feedback, moving between tighter Black Panel response and the looser feel of a Tweed Champ.

Flip both one way, flip both the other, or start mixing them. Thatโ€™s where this little amp gets really fun.

True point-to-point wiring, quality components, a finger-jointed white-pine cabinet, Fender Brown Tolex, and an 8" Jensen.

And the best part? Itโ€™s handmade with love right here in South Central Kentucky by Hunter Amplifiers.

A few years ago, I built a custom single-ended amp that blended two iconic eras of Champ tone into one box. A customer brought up that build recently, which got the wheels turning on how to revisit the design with some refined layout improvementsโ€”and the new version is fresh off the bench!

Two Switches. Two Eras (Plus Hybrids).
Instead of just a single mode toggle, the 2-Face features two front-panel switches that let you tailor both stages of the circuit independently:

Stage 1 Switch: Adjusts the bias of the first gain stage and selects the signal pathโ€”routing it either straight into the second gain stage for raw 5F1 Tweed drive, or through the passive tone stack for scooped AA764 Black Panel cleans.

Stage 2 Switch: Reconfigures the bias structure and shifts the negative feedback loop between tight Black Panel dynamics and loose, organic Tweed sag.

Because the switches operate independently, you aren't limited to *just* pure Tweed or pure Black Panelโ€”you can mix and match stages to dial in custom hybrid voicings you won't find on standard vintage reissues.

True Point-to-Point Wiring: Built ultra-clean using only a pair of tag strips and short wire runs to keep the noise floor dead quiet.

Top-Tier Components: Built with JJ tubes, Vishay coupling caps, MOD electrolytic capacitors, and rugged Switchcraft jacks.

Custom Cabinetry: Hand-built from white pine with traditional finger joints, wrapped in Fender brown Tolex.

Speaker: Paired with an 8" Jensen Special Design speaker for classic vintage detail and punch.

This amp lands at Cumberland Guitars on Saturday. Off the workbench: 1965 Alamo "Reverb+" Reverb Unit

I recently finished work on a customerโ€™s vintage Alamo Reverb standalone unit. Dating codes on the transformer and pots place it right around 1965. It came into Cumberland Guitars because of an online purchase from another dealer gone wrong and with a tag attached that read: "Make it work, Bob."

It lit up but wasn't reverbing at all when it arrived on the bench, though I could see the core circuit was solid once a few underlying issues and past service choices were addressed.

1. Initial Diagnosis & Repair
The primary culprit keeping the unit effect-free was a failed connection on the cable feeding signal to the reverb tank (a recent replacement unit). I replaced one damaged plug, re-soldered the other, cleaned all the pots and jacks, and tightened up the loose tube sockets. I also tested every coupling capacitor for leakage (none!) and replaced an oversized and vastly overrated replacement cap that was too heavy for the leads it was j-hooked to. Once those mechanical and signal connections were refreshed, I fired it up, and the unit immediately "sprang" to life. (See what I did there?)
2. Power Supply & Cap Overhaul
A previous technician had serviced this unit before and generally did serviceable work, including a properly installed grounded 3-prong power cord. However, they had replaced the original filter supply using four 40uF capacitors rated at only 160V (paralleling two to make the 80uF node shown in the schematic).
Because standard Alamo schematics from this era don't list B+ voltages, the tech likely assumed 160V was enough, possibly based on the original "firecracker" can cap rating. I don't know. Bench testing showed that while steady-state B+ sits right at 136V, startup inrush spikes up to 188V before settling down. Sure enough, one of those 160V caps was already showing physical signs of leakage.

* Capacitor Upgrade: I replaced the power supply filtration with high-quality radial Nichicons: an 82uF/350V on the primary node and two 47uF/450V on downstream nodes.
* Mounting Solution: Because modern high-voltage radials didn't fit inside the original firecracker mounting clamp, I zip-tied the cluster securely and silicone-bonded them to the chassisโ€”not pretty, but functional, insulated, and secure.
* Rectifier Refresh: I also swapped out the aging silicon diode for a fresh 1N4007 for reliable long-term performance.

3. Virtual Center Tap for Hum Reduction
I noted that one side of the 6.3V heater winding was tied directly to the chassis, which was likely the factory design. To pull 60Hz hum off the circuit ground, I lifted that direct chassis tie and wired in a pair of 100-ohm artificial center-tap resistors across the filament winding. The baseline hum dropped dramatically.

4. Voltages & Final Performance
The circuit runs a 6U8A triode/pentode paired with a 12AX7 twin triode:
* Driver / Pentode Stage: The 6U8A triode section directly feeds the reverb tank driver off its cathode, sitting at 131V, while the pentode section runs at only 33V on the plate and 17V on the screen.
* Recovery Stage: The 12AX7 recovery triodes sit at a paltry 40V and 61V on the plates.
At these conservative supply voltages, the tubes are barely working. They run cool and should last a very long time.

I bench-tested the restored unit using a 2-Face Champ build-in-progress, and it completely brought the amp to life. Itโ€™s relatively quiet, delivers a lush vintage wet signal, and expands the versatility of a non-reverb amp immensely.
Ready to go back to the customer this Saturday!

A quintessential piece of Kalamazoo history! Built during Gibson's golden era, this low-wattage combo was positioned as a quirky, distinctly voiced alternative to Fender's student amps. Itโ€™s a beautifully simple, lightweight grab-and-go amp known for its warm, swampy overdrive and lush, hypnotic modulation.

๐Ÿค” The Anatomy of a 4-Tube Wonder
How exactly does this amp manage a preamp stage, a tremolo oscillator, phase inversion, and a push-pull power section with only four tubes (one of which is a rectifier)? Mid-century circuit efficiency! Gibson utilized dual-purpose tubesโ€”like the ECL82/6BM8โ€”which ingeniously pack both a high-mu triode and a power pentode into a single glass envelope. The triode halves handle the phase-inverter and tremolo, while the pentode halves take care of the power output.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Excavating the 1970s
This one came in for a much-needed recap, refresh, and repair. Opening the chassis revealed it had definitely had "some work done." Based on the archaeological evidence, Iโ€™d date the intervention to the early '70s. The previous tech used components with completely wrong specifications and exhibited what I can generously call "marginal skill" with a soldering iron.

However, credit where credit is due: they somehow sourced the greatest masking tape ever manufactured to splice the high-tension wires. Fifty-plus years of heat and voltage, and that tape was still holding on for dear life! ๐Ÿคฏ

After marveling at that adhesive miracle, I got to work:

๐Ÿงผ Meticulously scrubbed the inside of the chassis, scraped decades of gunk off the wiring, and measured every accessible component.
โœ‚๏ธ Retired an old can-cap that was ingeniously suspended in mid-air by a tightly wrapped coil of solid-core Romex. Replaced it with three discrete capacitors: an axial 20uF/500V MOD, and two Nichicon 10uF/450V radials.
โšก Swapped out all three bypass caps for fresh MOD 25uF/50V components, dug out the crumbling remains of a 250-ohm cement resistor, and evicted a heavily toasted 470-ohm, 1-watt carbon comp dropping resistor.
๐Ÿ”Œ Redid the mains wiring completely. Installed a proper grounded cord, disconnected the dreaded "death cap," and brought the primary wiring safely up to modern code.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Power & Biasing
The two original power tubes were on their way out, and since nobody is currently making them, finding replacements is a treasure hunt. Fortunately, I dug into the stash and found a pristine pair of Russian equivalents.

When I fired it up, the bias was running a bit too hotโ€”especially for hard-to-replace vintage glass. To keep the tubes happy, I raised the cathode resistor from 270 ohms to 330 ohms. That cooled things down perfectly, and all voltages settled exactly where they belonged.

After a final round of cleaning the pots and jacks and inspecting every solder joint, sheโ€™s ready to sing. Sheโ€™s a fantastic-sounding, incredibly vibey little amp with an absolute knockout tremolo. Ready for another 50 years of serviceโ€”no masking tape required!
