I am happy to finally announce my new company - The Maui Mercer - a collection of handwoven home and personal accessories from throw blankets, towels, table linens, rugs, pillows and more. The name came about after researching the word "mercantile" and discovering a mercer is one who deals in textiles. Mercers were formerly merchants or traders who dealt in cloth, typically fine cloth that was not produced locally. However inventories of mercers in small towns suggest that many were shopkeepers who dealt in various other dry commodities, not only cloth. Related occupations include haberdasher, draper and cloth merchant.
I have been planning this for over 2 years. Always putting it on hold because I always said "yes" to new work that came my way. Not a bad thing, but it was finally time to say "no" to others and "yes" to me. I finally got it started a few weeks before I detached retina which required surgery. I've lost about 98% vision in my left eye which subsequently side tracked me for the last 6 months and the project was put on hold.
Not one to be kept down I have been weaving as much as possible since October and have completed 2 rugs, 4 throw blankets and 6 towels... with another 6 towels on the loom now. It's been a challenge with only one eye and my editorial duties, but I am making great progress. I work on a Leclerc Nilus II 60" floor loom and hope to add a frame loom to the mix soon.
I plan to have an online store up sometime Spring 2016. Along with handwoven items, the shop will include other pieces I plan to make with my 30 year collection of textiles. Look for knitted pieces, crochet pieces, small bags, pillows and other collectables. In the meantime, please contact me with inquiries. Custom orders welcome.
Pieces are currently available exclusively at Pearl in Paia.
Please visit The Maui Mercer and like my page and to keep up with the progress.
And a HUGE MAHALO to John Giordani for helping me design the logo. Isn't it gorgeous?
