We're sorry for the lack of posting as of late. But we have closed Mugwump Studios for the moment so that we can take a much needed rest, and focus on our jobs and other projects. This summer has been pretty difficult for us and so taking a break from our shop is what we've decided is best for our mental health. Gardening, baking, and playing around with woodwork, home improvement, and freelance illustration are just a few things keeping us busy. This isn't goodbye, we will definitely open the shop again at some point. We just don't have an exact date for you at the moment. But we are always available to contact by email at [email protected] if you really need something.

Thanks for all your support, guys! And we hope you great Halloween and upcoming holidays 💖

Mugwump Studios is based in Kerrville, Texas, where the recent catastrophic flooding occurred on July 4th. It has been painful to see all the destruction this flood caused to our little town and the surrounding neighborhoods. Places we once enjoyed are gone. Our hearts are with all the grieving families who have lost loved ones, homes, pets, several of whom we know personally.

But as a singular beacon of hope and a symbol of resilience after the chaos of Friday, is Lupe, our beloved fish statue located at Louise Hays Park, who survived despite the park suffering severe damage and being entirely submerged underwater for over 12 hours. The park stage and several structures were destroyed, the majority of the forest flattened, but Lupe remains .

What Exactly IS a Mugwump Anyway?

It all started in 2011, when Patience, a lifelong arthropod enthusiast, purchased her first leaf bug from a local reptile expo. The leaf bug was a brilliantly green-hued female Heteropteryx dilatata, and she was given the peculiar name of 'Mugwump' because, according to Patience, "she just looked like a Mugwump." She ate blackberry leaves and lived a long and happy life, until her natural passing a few years later. Since then, Patience has kept many different kinds and colors of leaf and stick bugs, but they were all given the same name, 'Mugwump,' in honor of their predecessor. Eventually, all phasmids in general became known as Mugwumps, and the word became a common descriptor among her friends and family. So when we decided to open an Etsy store, we knew exactly what we had to name it after! Our logo was designed to resemble the face of a Heteropteryx dilatata, paying homage to the very first Mugwump Patience ever owned. The face of these insects may not look very cute to some people, but we find them adorable, and we think it fits our unique style and our interest in everything that is weird and wonderful. Jeffrey and Patience were married in 2015, and since then we have combined our love for anthropomorphic art and Mother Nature's intuitive designs to make this humble online store. Our specialty is undoubtedly anything and everything animal related, but we are interested in branching out in other directions as well. We are rapidly stocking our shop with new items, so make sure to follow us for updates!
