Internet Outage - Update 5:34pm Internet has been restored. Update 4:55 pm Restoration expected at 6 pm. Credit will appear on next bill. update 3:50 pm, crews are onsite at the Whitecourt fiber cut which has been confirmed to be thieves searching for copper. We are awaiting update from them regarding the time to repair. Alternate paths are limited due to fires in Canada. update 10:15 am. Primary City West fiber path through Clinton was burned in wildfire (see image) secondary (redundant) path through Rogers Communication is experiencing large fiber cut due to thieves in both Calgary, AB and Whitecourt, AB. Our partner City West is working on securing a third party path.

10pm Update- Internet is now restored. Customers will see a credit on September bill.
6pm Update- two crews are working, one at each end of the cut re-splicing the fiber optic cable cut by vandals. Work is expected to be completed between midnight and 1am.

4pm Update-confirmed fiber cable cut by copper thieves (see image) 12:40pm- City West has confirmed a fiber break between Burns Lake and Frazier Lake and are en route. 12:15 pm - Internet outage off island affecting KPU. We were able to communicate with our partners at City West in BC, and are awaiting more information from them.

KPU Telecommunication customer courtesy information:
Effective July1, 2026 there are Federal and State telephone rates that have increases. These increases will be in effect on your July KPU Telephone bill.

FUSC increase:
By action of the Federal Communications Commission, the Federal Universal Service Charge rate will increase from $2.41 to $2.52 per Residential line and from $3.52 to $3.69 per Business line on July 1, 2026. The Federal Universal Service Fund Program is designed to help keep local telephone service rates affordable for all customers, in all areas of the United States.

RCC increase:
Regulatory Cost Charge for Interexchange Telephone Utilities will increase from 4.963% to 7.275% and Local Exchange Telephone Utilities will increase from 1.017% to 1.166% on July 1, 2026 per U-26-009.2 by the Regulatory Commission of Alaska.

Friday 6/5- AT&T Cellular is experiencing an outage in Ketchikan both cell to cell calls and landline to cell calls. Verizon and GCI are unaffected. AT&T cellular partners such as Cricket, Consumer Cellular, Straight Talk and Boost are part of the outage.
