Aloha neighbors!
We've seen a rise in phishing attacks and online scams in our community recently, and I wanted to share some simple tips to help you stay safe online. Let's look out for each other and keep our information secure!
🛡️ Tips to Protect Yourself:
1. Keep Software Updated
- Regularly update your operating system, browsers, and apps to patch security vulnerabilities.
- Enable automatic updates where possible.
- If you are using Windows 7 or 10, we highly encourage you to upgrade to Windows 11. Especially since Windows 10 will no longer receive important updates starting next year.
2. Use Strong Passwords
- Mix letters, numbers, and symbols.
- Avoid using the same password for multiple accounts.
- Consider using a password manager to keep track of your passwords securely. It takes some initial setup, but it's worth it.
3. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
- Adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second form of verification.
- Set this up for your email, banking, and social media accounts.
4. Be Skeptical of Unsolicited Emails and Messages
- Don't click on links or download attachments from unknown senders.
- Verify the sender's email address and look for signs of phishing (e.g., spelling mistakes, unusual requests).
5. Verify the Source
- For phone calls, hang up and call back using a number you know is legitimate.
- For emails, contact the company directly using a known, official phone number or website.
Example Scams to Watch Out For:
- Fake Bank Alerts: Scammers posing as your bank, asking for your account details.
- IRS Scams: Calls claiming you owe taxes and must pay immediately to avoid arrest.
- Shipping Notification: Text messages claiming you have a package that needs attention and to click a link.
- Generic Text: Text messages with no context such as “hey are you going to make it to the party” from an unknown number.
Side Note: You might be tempted to “mess with” scammers over the phone, please don’t do this, all this does is confirm you are someone who will answer a call and be placed on a list. When in doubt , hang up!
Let's stay vigilant and protect ourselves and each other from these threats. Feel free to share this post with your friends and family!
Stay safe,
-Joe
