Want to raise a future creative thinker? Start reading to kids when they’re young.
Reading to chikdren doesn’t just build literacy. It also strengthens creative thinking and problem-solving.
When kids listen to a story, they’re imagining characters, picturing settings, and exploring possibilities beyond what’s on the page. It’s those creative thinking skills that help solve problems, generate new ideas, and approach challenges from different angles throughout their life.
Want to encourage all this? The simplest place to start is by opening a book.

🎉 Introducing Ready, Set, Kindergarten! 🎉
Getting ready for kindergarten is about so much more than knowing letters and numbers. It's about building confidence, independence, friendships, and a love of learning.
That's why we're excited to launch Ready, Set, Kindergarten, a FREE kindergarten readiness program from United Way of Greater Kingsport designed to help families prepare their preschool-aged children for a successful start in school.
Each month, enrolled families will receive:
A featured children's book, plus additional library recommendations
Simple activities that build fine motor, gross motor, cognitive, literacy, and social-emotional skills
Short demonstration videos from local occupational therapy students
Conversation starters to encourage learning through everyday moments
Easy, family-friendly activities that fit into your daily routine
Ready, Set, Kindergarten is built on the idea that preparing children for school is a community effort. Through partnerships with our local libraries, educators, university partners, and other community organizations, we're making kindergarten readiness more accessible for every family.
