Two of our favorite customers came to pick up their books today. Bob and Phoebe LaPolt. Bob is the author of "Memories", an autobiography, as well as several other books we've worked on together over the years.

All proceeds of Bob's book Memories is going towards the New Paltz Food pantry and can be purchased through the St. Josephs church in New Paltz NY.

Look who stopped in today... Richard Frisbie the past owner of Hope Farm Press. It was great to see Mr. Frisbie today, as we are asked quite often how he is doing. Well, as you can see, other than a broken arm he's doing wonderfully. He was kind enough to let us get his picture with some of his old favorites.

To learn more about Mr. Frisbie and how he came to own Hope Farm Press, not once, but TWICE, read below.

~

Early History
Hope Farm Press & Bookshop was established in 1959 in Cornwallville, Greene County, New York, by Charles Dornbusch, just before he retired from the New York City Public Library. The buildings and land were originally purchased by his family from the Hope family who had farmed it for years. Thus, it became Hope Farm Press. It was not connected with either the orphanage called Hope Farm, or Father Devine’s Hope Farm, both of which were also in the Hudson Valley.

Charles Dornbusch ran it as a walk-in and mail-order bookstore for 30 years. He specialized in military history and New York regional interest books. From his interest in the local history of New York’s Hudson Valley and Catskill Mountain region grew a catalogue of 500 books and pamphlets on New York State, and his remote Greene County Bookshop became the destination of people from all over the world. His death in 1990 left a void in the pursuit of the preservation of our heritage.

Through the 90's
When Mr. Dornbusch died in 1990 his heirs (Greene County Historical Society) invited Richard Frisbie to participate in a competitive bid for his business.

They sold the property separately, and Mr. Frisbie moved the contents to a building that started out as a chicken coop/garage in his hometown of Saugerties New York. While Mr. Frisbie continued to operate the book store, Booktrader, on Main Street, he ran Hope Farm as a mail-order, New York State Specialty book business.

In 1992 Mr. Frisbie sold Booktrader and opened Hope Farm Bookshop in the hastily converted garage with 300 feet of wooden shelves. His office was squeezed into the coop section with room for 2 computers and printers, and a side room with 8 pallets and 3 steel bookcases for the cases of stock he maintained.

The person Mr. Frisbie sold the Booktrader to (in 1992) called Mr. Frisbie on July 28th, 1997 and told him he was moving to California on August 20th. He asked if Mr. Frisbie wanted to buy back his old store in the Village of Saugerties. He knew Mr. Frisbie was very busy and needed more space. When it came down to either no book store in the village or Mr. Frisbie running Hope Farm out of the larger space . . . Mr. Frisbie bought it back and moved.

In 2021 ColorPage purchased Hope Farm Press from Mr. Frisbie and are thrilled to still see him from time to time when he has printing needs.

Hope Farm is proud to announce our newest Author ~ Bruce Golden of Bicycle Dreams. Visit HopeFarm.com to order and view our other great books by local authors.

Bruce Golden has been The Man of Lomontville
He lives on an old farm in the foothills of the Catskills with his wife Linda, where they raised their children Luke and Haley. Bruce taught science, health education and developed the In-school suspension program (problem solving center) for the Rondout Valley Schools. He was a columnist for the Bluestone Press as the Humanist, writing about the significance of all our lives. His bicycle journey has been told through his presentation “The America Crossing” to groups and dreamers of all ages.

The story of a boy from Brooklyn who was abandoned by the Dodgers, and his Schwinn Corvette Bicycle. Together they followed the path of his heroes from the TV show Route 66. A ridiculous, immature adolescent fantasy that burnt into his being and morphed into something so big and powerful that it took over and became the most important thing. The only thing. Bicycle Dreams became real reaching way beyond Route 66.

This book is about the importance of dreams.

Old West Hurley Revisited

The lush rolling farmlands, the busy bluestone quarries, the bustling little markets, the beautiful homes, the thriving little hotels with their barns and stables, and the tall majestic shade trees are only a memory now. No c**k crows at daybreak to announce the dawning of a new day. No longer can one hear the whistle and the rumble of the Rip Van Winkle Flyer as she glides through town. The church bells no longer peal out on a Sunday morning, beckoning the worshipers into the meeting. The air is no longer filled with the merry shouts and laughter of mischievous children on their way home from school, or the whinny of the horses and the clip-clop of their hooves as they pull their burdens through the dusty streets.

Oh, to be able to tum back the hands of the clock, and be carried back to a time and place of a bygone age; to be able to meet the people, to visit in their homes, to see them at their work, and to experience a few of their joys and sorrows; to travel their streets, to see their homes and shops, and to get a taste of life as they lived it…

So begins the nostalgic tour of the long-gone village that Allen Rowe loved – West Hurley, in Ulster County, NY. Here we have descriptions of the complete workings of a stone yard, a sawmill, and even the transportation of their finished products to market. But this isn’t just one man’s recreation of a day in the life of a thriving village about to be inundated by millions of gallons of New York City water. No, this is a documentation of a forgotten way of life – the quiet, rural, day-to-day existence of a previous generation, filled with benign gossip and accounts of the commonplace events and tragedies in the lives of all the residents. As you read these pages you will feel as if you know the people, with all their joys and sorrows. Allen Rowe brings them to life for us in the years before the Ashokan waters flooded their homes.
