Before anyone reads your website, they read your Google Business Profile.

Google ranks local results on relevance, distance, and prominence. Two of the three come from your profile, not your homepage.

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody hears it, did it make a sound?

Here's the 2026 version: if a business publishes content and nobody sees it, does it even exist?

AI has made content creation nearly free. Anyone can generate a blog post, a service page, or a month of social captions in an afternoon. Most businesses are doing exactly that right now.

But creation was never the hard part. Visibility is.

Content that never gets found never builds trust. It never gets cited by Google or ChatGPT. It never drives a phone call. The cost of producing it was low, but the return is zero.

The businesses winning local search in 2026 aren't the ones publishing the most. They're the ones whose content is structured to be found, verified, and quoted, by search engines and AI answer engines alike.

Creation is cheap now. Getting seen is the work.

Your customers are asking ChatGPT for recommendations tonight.

Here's the part most business owners don't know: ChatGPT isn't reading your Google Business Profile to answer them.

When someone asks ChatGPT for a roofer, a dentist, or a restaurant in your city, the first database it checks is Foursquare.

Yes, the old check-in app. OpenAI signed a data partnership with Foursquare in December 2024, and independent SEO research estimates 60-70% of ChatGPT's local results pull straight from Foursquare's listings. Most owners have never even opened it.

As of this summer, Yelp is now a licensed partner too. ChatGPT surfaces Yelp reviews, photos, and business info directly, and can even book reservations through it.

And here's a twist from a Whitespark study of 153 local queries across 9 US cities: in the Bing ecosystem that feeds ChatGPT's web search, Facebook was the leading review source in 8 of 9 cities. Not Google.

The catch-up takes one afternoon:

- Claim your Foursquare listing and fill in every field (name, category, services, hours, address)
- Make sure Yelp is claimed, accurate, and collecting reviews
- Claim Bing Places and match your name, address, and phone exactly
- Keep your Facebook reviews alive

Google Business Profile still matters. But it's no longer the whole game. The businesses fixing this now are the ones ChatGPT will be naming while their competitors wonder where the calls went.

Foursquare shifted from a consumer app to POI infrastructure, and OpenAI's January 2026 partnership made it a direct data source for ChatGPT's local answers. Here's how to use it.

The AI Visibility Gap: Why South Florida Businesses Winning on Google Maps Are Invisible to ChatGPT

You can own the map pack for “roofer near me” in Palm Beach County and still not exist the moment a homeowner asks ChatGPT who to call after a storm. New data shows exactly how wide that gap is, and what to do about it this week.

The numbers

SOCi’s 2026 Local Visibility Index analyzed nearly 350,000 business locations across 2,751 brands. Here is what it found:
• ChatGPT recommended only 1.2% of locations. The same brands appeared in Google’s local 3-pack 35.9% of the time. SOCi estimates AI visibility is 3 to 30 times harder to earn than a traditional local ranking.
• Other engines are more generous but still selective: Perplexity recommended 7.4% of locations, Gemini 11%.
• Accuracy is a real problem. Business info was only about 68% accurate on ChatGPT and Perplexity, versus 100% on Gemini, which is grounded in Google Maps.

ChatGPT and Perplexity piece your business together from Yelp, Facebook, directories, and your own site.

If those sources disagree, the AI guesses.
• Proximity breaks too. In one independent test, Google AI Mode’s restaurant picks averaged 4.9 miles away versus 0.3 miles in Maps, and it even recommended a restaurant that didn’t serve the cuisine asked for.
• Winning Maps doesn’t carry over. In retail, only 45% of brands leading traditional local search also showed up in AI recommendations, with similar patterns across other verticals.

More than half the businesses dominating the map were invisible in AI answers.

What this means here South Florida runs on “near me” searches with urgency behind them: a roof leak in Wellington during hurricane season, a last-minute dinner reservation in downtown West Palm, an AC failure in August.

Those are exactly the queries moving into AI assistants.

And South Florida makes the accuracy problem worse than most markets: seasonal hours, businesses that moved after a lease jump, plazas with three addresses for one storefront, and directory listings that never got updated after a rebrand.

Every inconsistency lowers an AI’s confidence in your business, and low confidence doesn’t mean ranking lower. It means not being mentioned at all.

4 GEO fixes to test this week

1. Treat your Google Business Profile as the source of truth, then push it outward.

Gemini and Google’s AI features pull from GBP directly.

ChatGPT does not have direct access to your GBP, but it reads the sites that republish your GBP data: Yelp, Apple Maps, Facebook, chamber directories, industry listings. So the play is two steps.

First, audit your GBP: exact NAP, current hours, full service list, active Posts. Second, make every other listing match it character for character.

That consistency is what closes the 68% accuracy gap on the engines that can’t see Maps.

2. Win retrieval before you worry about ranking.

ChatGPT and Perplexity pull the top web results for a query and synthesize an answer from them.

If your site isn’t in that retrieved set, you cannot be cited, period.

That means classic SEO still decides GEO outcomes: fast server response, clean heading structure, LocalBusiness and FAQ schema, pages that actually cover the topic.

Skip the hidden-prompt tricks. Win the fundamentals and you capture both channels with one effort.

3. Structure pages so an AI can lift the answer.

Build question-led pages for your real queries: “best [service] in Boca Raton,” “how much does [service] cost in Palm Beach County,” “who handles [problem] in Jupiter.” Lead with a clear, factual answer.

Add data only you have, like your own job counts, average timelines, or neighborhood-level pricing. Mark it up with FAQPage schema.

Extractable facts are what get quoted in AI summaries.

4. Build off-site trust signals across the sources AI actually reads.

Every consistent mention on a trusted third-party site is a vote of confidence to an AI engine.

For South Florida businesses that means Yelp, Apple Maps, Facebook, Nextdoor, your local chamber, and the directories specific to your industry.

Reviews matter here too: in SOCi’s data, locations ChatGPT recommended averaged 4.3 stars, and brands with weak ratings and low review response rates were effectively invisible.

A steady review cadence with real responses is now an AI visibility tactic, not just reputation management.

The takeaway

The map pack rewarded proximity and rankings.

AI engines reward confidence: accurate data everywhere, strong sentiment, and consistent third-party evidence that you’re real and good at what you do.

Almost nobody in South Florida has fixed this yet, which makes it one of the cheapest visibility opportunities in the market right now.

The 1.2% is small because the bar is high, not because the door is closed.

28% of consumers tried a brand new local business in the past 6 months… because AI recommended it.

That’s from Yext’s new survey of 3,848 consumers.

And 71% say they’re using AI MORE than a year ago to find local spots.

ilocal SEO’s take:

Everyone talks about AI search like it’s just content and theory.

But this data shows ranking in AI tools drives actual foot traffic.

Real people in Palm Beach County are walking into nail salons in Wellington, cafecito windows in Lake Worth, and taco spots in Delray because ChatGPT or Gemini pointed them there.

So the “AI search doesn’t drive real outcomes” argument isn’t aging well.

Think about it: a recommendation that gets someone to skip their usual spot and try somewhere NEW is about as high-intent as it gets.

If I ran a restaurant on Clematis Street or a in West Palm Beach right now, I’d make sure my hours, reviews, menus, and service descriptions were accurate and consistent everywhere AI tools pull from. Google Business Profile, Yelp, Apple Maps, Facebook, Foursquare, my own site.

All of it.

Because the next customer who “just found you” probably didn’t Google you at all. They took a whole journey to discover you, vet you, and choose you. And most of it happened inside an AI chat window.

For the uninitiated, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) often looks like a dry exercise in data entry and keyword density, a pursuit of pleasing an inscrutable machine.

But for those of us who live within the rhythm of crawl rates and search intent, SEO is something far more profound. It is a blend of psychology, data science, and creative storytelling. It is the modern-day equivalent of alchemy: the art of turning digital lead — raw data and unoptimized code into the gold of visibility and revenue.

To love SEO is to love the chase.
