Big news for anyone still running phone lines, fax machines, or alarm systems over old copper wiring: the FCC just cleared the way for AT&T to shut off landline service for 184,000 homes and 15,000 businesses in California, starting June 1, 2027.

This is part of a bigger shift happening at the federal level that makes it easier and faster for carriers to retire copper networks nationwide. California is just the most visible example right now.

There's a regulatory showdown happening in California that could affect copper phone lines everywhere.

AT&T is asking the FCC to override California's rules protecting copper service, on top of an already-approved plan to retire lines across roughly 360 wire centers. The California Public Utilities Commission is pushing back hard, and consumer groups are raising red flags about AT&T's wireless replacement in remote areas.

Here's the bottom line: no matter how the FCC rules, copper is going away faster, not slower. If your business runs fire alarms, elevators, fax machines, or security systems over POTS lines, now's the time to know which lines are copper and have a compliant backup plan ready.
