The father of modern digital printing - Chester Carlson.

We owe our business to a gentleman by the name of Chester Carlson. On October 22nd 1938, he performed the worlds first Electrophotography copy. It read "10-22-38 ASTORIA". He patented the idea and tried - in vain - to sell his idea to among others, IBM, who turned it down because they saw no practical use for it (the patent on xerography would probably make you the worlds richest individual these days). Eventually, the Haloid Company (neighbors of Kodak, who had also turned down the technology) invested $10,000 in Carlson's idea. Later, the US government invested $200,000 as they were concerned about the radioactive fallout from a nuclear war fogging the output from traditional copying machines (which relied on photographic plates and chemicals to make copies).
10 years to the day after the first electrophotographic copy, Haloid announced the "XeroX model A copier". Xerox was the patent name for the Xerographic process. Haloid thought Xerorgraphic was too long a name, so they shortened it to Xerox.
Needless to say, Chester made a lot of money at the time from his invention and devoted his later years to Philanthropic ventures, donating close to $10M to various institutions on the 1960s.
