Experts site big breakthrough: speed of computers combined with big data sets and "back propagation," the ability for computers to learn from_correct mistakes, means computers are able to adapt. Two areas where deep learning has propelled success: speech and object recognition. New technology changes astronomy with computer driven automated search for supernovae—no longer relying on humans to spend months at a time staring into the sky hoping to catch an explosion. Astronomers are stoked.

Might we apply the same concept to reducing gun violence with computer driven automated search technology for firearm detection—no longer relying on humans to stare into banks of monitors for hours on end?

That’s the idea. Now if only those who want to “do something” about gun violence would catch up with astronomers!

Most telescope cameras can only capture a small patch of sky at a time. But a new camera has a much larger field of view, and its backers are hoping for help in deciphering its reams of data.

Arapahoe Sheriff's report reveals chilling details about shooter's plans to attack Arapahoe HS last December. As long as we persist in believing that everything that can be, is being done to prevent this from happening again, people bent on committing violence will continue to have the advantage.
