This February, Dobbs Defense Solutions celebrates Black History Month by acknowledging a legacy of innovation.
Throughout history, Black Americans have been at the forefront of creativity, ingenuity, and innovation — solving everyday problems, pushing the boundaries of science, and revolutionizing industries.
Despite the challenges of their times, these pioneers secured patents, changed lives, and paved the way for future generations.
🔹 Thomas Jennings – The first African American to receive a U.S. patent in 1821 for his dry-cleaning process, "dry-scouring." He used his earnings to support abolitionist causes and free his family from enslavement.
🔹 Alexander Miles – In 1867, he made elevators safer by patenting automatic doors that closed simultaneously, preventing dangerous falls. His invention remains a fundamental part of modern elevators.
🔹 Alice H. Parker – In 1919, she transformed home heating by patenting a natural gas-powered central heating system, a precursor to the forced-air systems we use today.
🔹 Marie Van Brittan Brown – Concerned for her safety, she patented an early version of the modern home security system in 1969, complete with a camera, intercom, and panic button—technology that still protects homes worldwide.
🔹 Dr. Patricia Bath – A groundbreaking ophthalmologist, she invented the Laserphaco Probe in 1986, revolutionizing cataract surgery and restoring sight for millions globally.
🔹 Valerie Thomas – A NASA scientist who developed the illusion transmitter, a breakthrough in 3D imaging that’s still used in space technology today. She dedicated her career to inspiring young Black students in STEM.
Their inventions remind us that innovation is not just about ideas—it’s about impact.
Fostering innovation and bolstering education in STEM is a core value of our organization and our President & CEO, Erica Dobbs. We are committed honoring the thinkers, creators, and trailblazers whose contributions continue to shape the world, during Black History Month and throughout the year.
