These are the "starter" buys that usually create the most regret.

Not because they're always bad products—because they're often bought too early, before the foundation is set.

Here are 7 purchases to be careful with at the start (and why they backfire):
1️⃣ Random mix of brands (compatibility headaches later)
2️⃣ "Cheap" cameras (false alerts + unreliable recording)
3️⃣ Smart bulbs everywhere (when switches/controls would be the better first step)
4️⃣ A hub with no plan (a hub can't fix weak Wi-Fi or unclear goals)
5️⃣ Voice assistants as the "system" (great interface, not a strategy)
6️⃣ Too many devices at once (hard to troubleshoot, easy to abandon)
7️⃣ Impulse "deal" buys (you end up designing around a bargain)

If you want a calmer start, you need an order of operations: network → compatibility → first use-cases → expansion.

Most "it doesn't work" issues are compatibility issues you can predict.

Compatibility isn't just "does it connect?" It's:
✅ Does it stay connected?
✅ Does it work across updates?
✅ Does it support the automations you actually want?
✅ Does it play nicely with the ecosystem you're building?
✅ Can you recover quickly after outages?
✅ Can you recover quickly after outages?

This is why I focus on a buying order and checks—not random product picks.

I've tested 500+ devices in real homes, and the pattern is consistent: the earlier you run compatibility checks, the fewer rebuys you'll face.

Starter Plan includes the compatibility checks to run before buying (link in bio).

Quick truth: most smart home recommendations online are driven by affiliate commissions.

Smart Automator earns $0 from hardware sales.

You get a clear, step-by-step plan that fits your home and budget, so you don’t waste months (or money) buying stuff that won’t work together.

Want the checklist I use before recommending any device? Comment “CHECKLIST”.

I don't earn from hardware sales—so my incentives are simple: accuracy.

Here are 5 things I won't do:

❌ I won't recommend a device because it pays a commission.
❌ I won't tell you to "just buy a hub" without a plan.
❌ I won't push a one-size-fits-all setup for every home.
❌ I won't ignore network and compatibility (that's where most failures start).
❌ I won't pretend smart home is "set and forget" if it isn't.

What I WILL do: give you a clear, practical buying order that reduces regret.

The expensive part of smart home isn't "premium vs budget." It's the rebuy cycle.

The expensive mistake isn't one bad device—it's buying in the wrong order.

Most people start with the "fun" devices... before the foundation. Then they hit compatibility issues, weak Wi-Fi, or unreliable automations. That's when the rebuys happen: new hub, new cameras, new switches...

If you want to keep your budget under control, focus on sequence:
→ Get the network stable
→ Choose a compatible path
→ Then buy devices that support your actual use-cases

If you buy devices before the foundation, you'll rebuy everything later.

When people say "my smart home doesn't work," the root cause is usually one of these foundation issues:

1️⃣ Network/Wi-Fi Readiness
If your network can't handle it, no device choice will "fix" the experience.

2️⃣ Compatibility + Ecosystem Decisions
Not everything plays nicely together. A little planning prevents dead ends.

3️⃣ Use-Case Clarity (what you actually want automated)
Buying gadgets without a use-case creates clutter, not a system.

This is why I teach an order of operations instead of a shopping list.

Most smart home "recommendations" are optimized for commissions, not your house.

Here's why that matters: if the advice is tied to a payout, the "best" option often becomes the one that sells—not the one that fits your layout, your priorities, your network, or your tolerance for maintenance.

What I do differently at Smart Automator:
✅ No affiliate income (no incentive to push a brand)
✅ No earnings from hardware sales
✅ Recommendations based on what works in real homes, after testing 500+ devices

If you've been burned by a smart home purchase before, it usually wasn't because you picked the "wrong brand." It was because you didn't get a clear buying order and compatibility checks first.
