1998 – Apple scraps Newton
Apple's Newton was one of the most notable Apple product failures. While early adopters liked its handheld form factor, poor handwriting recognition and strong competition from the less expensive PalmPilot family led to Apple scrapping the Newton in 1998.

1997 – 3Com announced purchase of US Robotics
Networking equipment maker 3Com announced it would acquire US Robotics for $6.6 billion. US Robotics made modems, remote access servers, and Palm handheld devices. 3Com eventually spun off USR in 2000. After multiple acquisitions since then, the company is still around, still selling modems. 3Com, meanwhile, was acquired by HP in 2010.

1991 – First web browser
Tim Berners-Lee wrote WorldWideWeb, the first HTTP browser, for the NeXTSTEP platform. At the time, it was the only way to browse the nascent Web. Accounts differ, but many sites say the release date was this week in 1991.

1982 – Sun Microsystems Debuts Sun 1
Sun Microsystems introduced its first product, a Unix workstation. The Sun 1 ran SunOS and had no graphical user interface. The company didn't sell its first workstation until three months later. IT trivia: Sun took its name from the Stanford University Network, from the college which its founders attended. Sun was acquired by Oracle in 2009.

Scam of the Day PayPal
This phishing email is going around again hoping people will panic and click on the link to resolve the issue. If you get an email like this, do NOT click on the link. It is not from paypal. PayPal will never email you without using your name on your account, and they will not ask you to click on a link. They will ask you to go to their website to log in.

4 Valentines Day Scams to Avoid
Infected e-cards
Greeting cards are probably the easiest way for scammers to infect a computer with malware that gives them remote access to your files, online banking accounts and passwords. Some criminals simply want to use your computer as a spam-sending botnet.
What to do: Don’t click on an embedded link, unless you know the sender. Avoid names you don’t recognize and senders such as [email protected]
Even if you recognize the sender’s name, go to the card company’s website to open the card and read it.

Google-based Traps
Many gift-givers start looking for a product search on Google or another search engine. Scammers take advantage by creating bogus websites. Posing as legitimate vendors, they sell counterfeit goods or nothing at all while collecting people’s credit card information.
What to do: Go directly to a retailer’s website -- it’s the safest way to shop online. Type the address instead of trusting keyword searches.

Social Media Frauds
Beware of messages, poems, love letters, quizzes that seem to come from friends. They may be sent by scammers’ ruses to get you to download malware or make purchases on unsafe websites. Also, beware of apps that lead you to survey websites that generate commissions for scammers or put you at risk for identity theft.
What to do: Think twice before opening messages with generic greetings such as “Valentine’s Day” and “Special Greeting.” Even if you know the sender, be aware that the message may not be from him or her.

Sales-related Scams
Be suspicious of all offers that appear in your inbox unless the offer is from a company you’ve done business with — and that already has your contact information. Links within such emails can contain malware or draw you to scammer-run websites.
What to do: Read each address carefully. Scammers often create a bogus site that looks quite similar to the original. Instead of www.target.com the bogus site might be www.target.com.hu. Without clicking on the site, point your mouse to hover over the link to see its full address.

This Week in Tech History
February 2005 – Google Maps Launches
Google Maps is launched to the public.

February 2001 – Anna Kournikova virus unleashed
The attachment AnnaKournikova.jpg.vbs wasn't a photo of the attractive tennis pro that a friend was sending you, but one of the first programs – technically not a virus but a worm – created from a virus toolkit called VBSWG. "The virus plundered the user's email inbox, accessed their address book, and sent itself to every contact in it," so it spread quickly.

February 1996- Bandai Pippin is introduced
The Bandai Pippin is introduced. A little-known “multimedia device” using technology licensed from Apple Computer, it was an ill-fated attempt at a home video game console. It was 22nd on PC World’s list of the “25 Worst Tech Products of All Time”.

February 1963- First Flight of the Boeing 727
The first flight of the Boeing 727 occurred on Feb 9th. For over a decade, it was the most produced commercial jet aircraft in the world.

February 1945- First Calculator Patent
A calculator patent is filed for the Automatic Sequence Control Calculator, commonly known as the Harvard Mark I, an early computer. The Mark I was a large electro-mechanical computer that could perform the four basic arithmetic functions and handle 23 decimal places. A multiplication took about five seconds.

This Week in Tech History
2004 – thefacebook.com debuts
Harvard undergraduate Mark Zuckerberg created thefacebook.com and made it available on the Internet 11 years ago this week. Initially it was available only to Harvard students, then to anyone with a .edu email address, and eventually to anyone 13 and older. Despite competition from the likes of Friendster and MySpace, Facebook, as it is known today, has a good chance of catching on.

1996 – Congress passes the Communications Decency Act
Congress was alarmed that there might be po*******hy on the Internet, attempted to regulate it with this legislation, which contained both anti-indecency and anti-obscenity provisions. Turns out that the anti-indecency portion conflicted with the First Amendment's right to free speech, and was ruled unconstitutional. A key portion of the bill provided protection for Internet service providers, which gained protection from legal actions against third parties who used their services.

1982- Intel 286 Processor Introduced
The Intel 80286 processor is introduced in 6 and 8 MHz versions. It was employed for the IBM PC/AT, introduced in 1984, and then widely used in most PC/AT compatible computers until the early 1990s. The “286”, as it was most commonly called, paved the way for the PC (and now Macintosh) as we know it today.

1977- TRS-80 Born
The prototype of the TRS-80 computer is shown to Charles Tandy, the CEO of the Tandy Corporation, owner of theRadio Shack chain of stores. He agrees to begin production based on this demonstration and the computer goes on sale in August. “TRS” stood for Tandy Radio Shack. The relatively inexpensive TRS-80 helped to spur the acceptance of the personal computer in the home.

1958 – ARPA founded
President Eisenhower created the Advanced Research Planning Agency, a unit of the Department of Defense, 57 years ago this week. Its mission was to develop new technology for military use. The agency was renamed DARPA in 1972. It had a key role in the creation of the Internet, among many other successful technologies.
