1998 – Apple scraps Newton
Apple's Newton was one of the most notable Apple product failures. While early adopters liked its handheld form factor, poor handwriting recognition and strong competition from the less expensive PalmPilot family led to Apple scrapping the Newton in 1998.
1997 – 3Com announced purchase of US Robotics
Networking equipment maker 3Com announced it would acquire US Robotics for $6.6 billion. US Robotics made modems, remote access servers, and Palm handheld devices. 3Com eventually spun off USR in 2000. After multiple acquisitions since then, the company is still around, still selling modems. 3Com, meanwhile, was acquired by HP in 2010.
1991 – First web browser
Tim Berners-Lee wrote WorldWideWeb, the first HTTP browser, for the NeXTSTEP platform. At the time, it was the only way to browse the nascent Web. Accounts differ, but many sites say the release date was this week in 1991.
1982 – Sun Microsystems Debuts Sun 1
Sun Microsystems introduced its first product, a Unix workstation. The Sun 1 ran SunOS and had no graphical user interface. The company didn't sell its first workstation until three months later. IT trivia: Sun took its name from the Stanford University Network, from the college which its founders attended. Sun was acquired by Oracle in 2009.
