An active severe weather event is unfolding across a large portion of the east-central United States, with a widespread squall line expected to bring significant hazards through tonight.

The primary threat involves widespread damaging wind gusts of 60 to 80 MPH as a powerful cold front sweeps through the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys. A few tornadoes, some potentially strong, are possible both within the line and as discrete cells ahead of it.

On Monday, the focus shifts to the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast, where a Moderate Risk is in effect for parts of the Carolinas, Virginia, and Maryland. This region faces a high potential for particularly damaging winds and strong, long-track tornadoes during the afternoon and evening hours.

Significant severe weather potential will extend from the Florida Panhandle and Georgia all the way into Pennsylvania as the system pivots northeastward. Everyone in these regions should have multiple ways to receive warnings and stay updated on rapidly changing conditions.

There is a Moderate Risk (level 4 of 5) in NW Indiana and Northern Illinois. This is a serious situation, so be sure to be weather aware this afternoon and evening, as well as overnight in the other areas on the map.

As part of Severe Weather Preparedness Week, the state of Indiana will participate in a statewide tornado drill and test its Emergency Alert System (EAS) TOMORROW at 10:15 AM EDT. During this time, Indiana counties may sound and test their outdoor warning sirens. Schools, businesses and households are encouraged to practice their tornado drills and review safety procedures.
