5 THINGS EVERY PM LEARNS THE HARD WAY 👷♂️
Project management in construction is often about learning that the smallest assumptions can create the biggest problems.
Here are 5 lessons experienced PMs learn quickly:
“I’ll remember that” → Document it.
Important details should never depend on memory. Document decisions, field observations, changes, and commitments so there is a clear record when questions come up later.
“It’s probably fine” → Check it.
Assumptions can lead to rework. Verify dimensions, conditions, drawings, materials, and installation details before they become someone else’s problem.
“We’ll handle it later” → Don’t wait.
An unresolved issue rarely becomes easier with time. Delaying an RFI, coordination issue, or field problem can affect multiple activities downstream.
“Everyone knows” → Confirm it.
What is obvious to one person may not be clear to another. Confirm responsibilities, decisions, revisions, and instructions with the people who actually need to act on them.
“It’s just a small change” → Check the downstream impact.
A small change can affect procurement, sequencing, labor, inspections, schedule, and other trades. Before approving it, understand what happens next.
The biggest lesson?
Construction problems don't always start as big problems.
They often start as small assumptions that nobody stopped to verify.
Good PMs don't just manage today's work. They look ahead and ask:
“What could this affect next?”
Build smart. Catch things early. Keep the project moving.
