Circus Scorpius redefines circus arts in KC by creating narrative, meaningful, high-level shows

Join us tomorrow night for another Second Saturday! The unbelievably bendy Tyler will be debuting a brand new contortion solo. Afterwards, stay for snacks, games, and conversation.

Join us TONIGHT for Second Saturday at Skyloft at 7p for performances by .m.circus and jugglers and Ernie. The latter quartet will be previewing a piece from the upcoming .s_company show 'Return to Atlantis' which will be opening in May.

Second Saturday has a suggested $5-10 donation. Guests are welcome to stay after the performances to play games and socialize with the community.

MEET THE CAST: Madeline

“My favorite way to connect with people is when it is unexpectedly validating for us both.” - Madeline Elaine Farinas de Leon
Madeline began aerial training in the Chicagoland area after discovering lyra at age twelve. Specializing in Roman rings and lyra, she is a versatile generalist who performs across multiple circus disciplines. Her work is strongly informed by circus history, drawing inspiration from archival photographs, and historical writings.
Madeline is performing as the opening act to ‘Désolé’ on Roman rings with a contemporary twist and explores giving up a comfortable, long-worn identity in service of moving on, and the struggles that come with an inability to face that transition directly.

MEET THE CAST: Eliana

“I like going on adventures with people -- it could be checking out a park we haven't been to or going on a road trip. Experiencing wonder, curiosity, and exploring together helps me feel connected to people. It gives us something in common to react to as well.” - Eliana Perlmutter

Eliana is a circus performer specializing in Cyr wheel, partner acrobatics, and tumbling, known for emotionally engaging, joyful performances. After graduating from Smith College and working in Washington, DC, she shifted to circus full-time, co-founding Constructive Interference and performing with other companies such as Arc Benders Circus Opera.

In ‘Désolé,’ Eliana plays the role of Sierra, Louis’s partner, who does all that she can to connect with Louis as they try to withdraw inside themself.

MEET THE CAST: Carina

“I enjoy connecting with people through art - surprise, lol. The power of art, to me, is that it can create a powerful shared experience between strangers that can collectively remind us of our shared vulnerability and humanity. This feels very important, especially during this time when empathy feels like a taboo thing to possess.” - Carina Gillet

Carina is an international, multidisciplinary circus artist and coach specializing in partner acrobatics, mixed aerials, and interdisciplinary creation. Performing professionally since age seventeen, they have worked across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and the UAE with numerous companies. This marks their third production with Circus Scorpius.

In ‘Désolé,’ Carina plays the role of Louis Dapper, a character whose depression and suicidal ideation fracture their relationships and spiral into isolation.

MEET THE CAST: Mallory

“I like to connect with people in person, and usually with a joke.” - Mallory Gittemeier

Mallory is a Kansas City–based dancer, aerialist, and choreographer with degrees in Dance and Mathematics from Webster University. She has performed with numerous regional dance and aerial companies and currently dances with Kansas City Dance Collective, where she also serves as Director of Finance alongside her work as a reporting analyst.

In ‘Désolé,’ Mallory plays the role of Margaret’s longtime friend, Talia, who finds Margaret’s habit of falling too quickly for the wrong men frustrating.

MEET THE CAST: Sonja

“I really enjoy asking people about themselves and also connecting with others through dance or circus performance. I tend to meet a lot of people through teaching or rehearsing, and the more I have gotten to work with them, the more I get to learn about them in those pockets of time working together or socialising before/after rehearsals.” - Sonja Schulz

Sonja Schulz is a Kansas City–based dancer and aerialist with a BFA in Dance from the University of Iowa. She performs with KC Dance Collective and Circus Scorpius, teaches dance, aerial, and fitness, and continues to expand her work through aerial, vertical dance, and movement storytelling.

In ‘Désolé,’ Sonja plays the role of Margaret’s longtime friend, Elizabeth, who worries about Margaret getting too carried away whenever she falls for someone new.

MEET THE CAST: Madi

“My favorite way to connect with people? Sitting and chatting with little to no outside noise or distraction. Come as you are and I promise that will be good enough.” - Madi Nispel
Madi Nispel is a Kansas City author, performer, fitness instructor, and aerial coach with a background in dance and group fitness. Discovering aerial arts in 2020, she now performs and teaches locally, specializing in juggling and aerial disciplines while fostering creativity, empowerment, and storytelling through both movement and writing.

In ‘Désolé,’ Madi plays the role of Nick, Margaret’s manipulative boyfriend with a fiery temper.

MEET THE CAST: Melissa

“I like connecting with people through humor and stories.” - Melissa Hoefer

Melissa began aerial training in 2014 in Columbia, Missouri, drawing on a background in gymnastics and cheer. A certified personal trainer and aerial coach, she has performed with multiple companies and joined Circus Scorpius in 2022, performing across numerous aerial apparatuses while supporting others through coaching and act development.

In ‘Désolé,’ Melissa plays the role of Margaret, a young woman who obsesses over her romantic relationships that she tends to isolate herself from everyone else in her life.
