One of our favorite days of the year! 🌮

Yesterday, we hosted a special edition of APAX Family Lunch with our coworking friends and neighbors at Awesome Inc. Fresh tacos, drinks, and friendships filled the startup garage and summertime air.

We could deliver a hundred perfect software projects, but if we don't focus on the people first, none of the success would matter.

3 Years with Rolando!

Surfing into year 3, Rolando has continued to be a steady, kind, and excellent member of the APAX team. Over the last year, Rolando has helped us get projects for PC(USA) and UK Athletics across the finish line. Plus, he's currently working on a PhD in A.I. Computer Vision. Pretty soon, we'll have another Doctor on the team!

One thing our newest Project Manager, Lindsay Rall, noticed right away at APAX?

The speed of communication.

During a recent conversation about our work with UK HealthCare (blog coming soon ✍️), Lindsay called out how quickly the team turns around communication with partners and how much that seems to shape the client experience.

In complex projects, good communication is not a “nice to have.” It keeps decisions moving, helps stakeholders stay aligned, and prevents small questions from turning into big delays.

The code matters. The architecture matters. The CMS matters.

But the way a team communicates around the work can be the difference between a stressful project and a trusted partnership.

Some software projects are really people projects.

Keith Downing, one of our Developers at APAX, recently wrote about a project that started with an old coworker, a shared office, and years of trust.

The client had outgrown a core process built on spreadsheets, off-the-shelf tools, manual approvals, vendor coordination, and QuickBooks entries. Their team was making it work, but one missed step could create billing mistakes, client issues, or slowdowns that were hard to trace.

That’s a tooling problem, not a people problem.

So Keith and the APAX team helped build a custom platform that brings requests, approvals, vendor coordination, and QuickBooks invoice syncing into one place.

What made the project meaningful wasn’t just the technical solution. It was the trust behind it. Two years of discovery, iteration, honest conversations, tradeoffs, and problem-solving went into building something that actually fit the way the client works.

As Keith put it: “The software built by people who genuinely care about each other tends to turn out better.”

Agents are real now, but only if they live inside your workflow.

Anthropic spells out the part most teams underestimate: putting AI into “core operations takes hands-on engineering and deep familiarity with how each business runs.”

They even describe a healthcare example where the work starts by sitting with clinicians and IT, then building tools that fit into existing workflows for documentation, coding, prior auth, and compliance reviews.

That's the pattern we see too. Agents do not fail because the model cannot write. They fail because the workflow is messy, the permissions are unclear, and nobody owns the edge cases.

Last month we hosted a Corporate Innovation Roundtable with , and we got hands-on with a tool more teams should know about: Wardley Mapping.

Instead of debating strategy in circles, we mapped a simple example together: a hypothetical pivot into the tea house business. We broke it down from customer needs all the way through the real dependencies that make the experience work, from tea leaves and roasting to cups, electricity, servers, and location.

The “aha” for a lot of people was this: in a map, space has meaning. When you place components based on how evolved they are, you start to see where to innovate, where to standardize, and where to scale.

Another big takeaway was how much this improves decision-making. It depersonalizes the conversation. You’re not challenging someone’s narrative, you’re challenging the map together. That creates shared ownership, clearer alignment, and better decisions.

We also dug into real applications across AI adoption, enterprise data strategy, product development, healthcare, and workforce design. The theme came up again and again: not every problem needs a bigger presentation. Sometimes it just needs a better map.
