Paris has been lovely, but very crowded with visitors. Streets are just jammed and long lines for even the less famous sites like L’Orangerie. Apparently a result of Olympics 2024 and “revenge travel” after COVID. I still love this city even still.

Another night sky image from Arches National Park, by request. We were surprised that you can see the Milky Way core. Back in the northeast where I live, I don't think it's visible this late in the year.

The momentum is gathering steam.
LFG Kamala!

On Day 3, Gov. Tim Walz sought to rid the Democrats of their elite image. But another star was Oprah Winfrey, who mesmerized the crowd with an appeal for common sense and decency.

The concept of mental models is one of the most important in the world of UX, but often poorly understood. Its also very important for innovators. Here's a bit we wrote to help explain it...

A great deal of user experience design relies on the proper application of mental models. And yet, increasingly, product managers, innovators, and even user experience designers are only vaguely aware of the concept of mental models. In my opinion, it is one of the most important concepts in the ent...

Don Norman tells it like it is. Apple is ignoring very important usability principles in many of it key products. While I think Apple still leads the world in user centered design, it feels like they've lost their way. Usability is now secondary to visual appeal, and that is a big mistake.

I'm a long-term fan of Apple, having used their products since the days of the Apple II computer. I loved the products so much that in 1993 I left my University job and moved to Apple where I established the User Experience Architect's Office. Afterwards I became Vice President of Apple's Advanced T…

Another tour-de-force of information design by the NY Times!

This one about free climbing the Dawn Wall of El Capitan. The visuals are stunning:

Few of the nearly 100 routes up El Capitan have been free-climbed, meaning ropes are used only to catch a climber’s fall — not to aid the ascent. Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson are attempting to free-climb the 3,000-foot Dawn Wall, a vertical sheet of mostly smooth granite that many believe is th…

Wonderful article in the Boston Globe about innovation in Russia. The article interview's MIT's Loren Graham who studied the problem in depth.

He argues that Russian scientists are extremely innovative and have created all kinds of amazing things including lasers and electric lighting.

But they have almost never profited from it, and worse, their inventions rarely make it into Russian society. Rather, they end up being made broadly available in other cultures that have the polictical and economic systems in place to make it possible.

Fascinating stuff:

We should all worry about a great power’s failure to convert on its knowledge, says MIT’s Loren Graham.
