Autocross Technique Series Pt. 5: Trail Braking for Tight Offsets 🛑🔄
In track driving, braking is mostly about scrubbing speed. In autocross, your brake pedal is a steering tool.

If you crush the brake pedal in a straight line, release it completely, and then turn the wheel—you’re likely fighting understeer at every apex.

Why Trail Braking Works:
💡 Easing off the brake pedal gradually as you turn keeps weight pinned on the front tires.
💡 That extra front-end grip allows the car to rotate sharply into tight pinch points and offset gates.
💡 Less steering lock required = faster throttle application on exit.
⚠️ The Warning: Too much trail braking in a high-speed element will unsettle the rear. Reserve aggressive trail braking for tight, technical turn-ins.

The most common feedback from instructors? "Look up!"
When you stare at the cone right off your front bumper, two things happen:
You feel like the course is moving too fast.
You react instead of plan—leading to heavy over-braking and choppy steering.
How to fix your vision on course:
🎯 Rule of 2 Elements: While your car is in element A, your eyes should already be mapping your entry into element B or C.
🎯 Look where you WANT to go: Target fixation is real. Stare at the cone, and you'll hit it or overslow for it. Stare at the gap, and the car follows.
🎯 Trust your periphery: Use your peripheral vision to graze the apex cone while your focal point locks onto the next setup.

Autocross Technique Series Pt. 3: The Slalom Cadence ⏱️
Ever feel like you’re fighting the wheel in a slalom, getting later and later to every cone until you finally take out a gate?
You don’t have a steering problem. You have a setup problem.
The Golden Rule: Late at the first cone, early for the rest.
🔹 Backside the cones: Pass behind the cone before starting your turn for the next one.
🔹 Lock in the rhythm: Smooth, rhythmic throttle holds momentum far better than stabbing the gas between cones.
🔹 Don't react, anticipate: If you're turning when you reach the cone, you're already late.
📊 Data Check with CLOKKR: Slalom mistakes cascade rapidly. If your split times drop off heavily through a multi-cone section, review your entry point. Fixing your line at Cone #1 often saves half a second by Cone #5.

Shifty hands - move them as you turn, swapping grip to follow the wheel. Feels active and gives quick steering input.

Zoccone - keep hands fixed at one spot, let the wheel rotate under your grip. Smooth and consistent.
