Their previous MSP stopped hosting their servers and left them to sort it out.

A construction company in our area was running their whole business off one employee's desktop. Everyone networked into her machine. Files lived in Dropbox.

It worked, technically. Until it didn't. Two people would open the same drawing and end up with two different versions. Nobody could tell which one was current. Everything ran slow. And the only computer being backed up was the one sitting under her desk.

We looked at the setup and recommended a real server. Consolidated every file into one place, put proper offsite backups behind it, and built in room for the company to keep growing.

The transition took two to three weeks with zero downtime. They stopped paying roughly $1,000 a month for Dropbox and got back about 10 hours they'd been losing to chasing down file problems.

Most small businesses don't outgrow their setup all at once. It happens slowly, and then one day you're paying someone to sort out which version of a file is real.

An Arkansas law firm's entire network went dark early on a Friday morning. Every server encrypted. Attackers demanded $30,000 to $50,000.

By Monday morning the firm was back to work. Zero files lost. One business day of downtime. Nothing paid.

Two things made that possible: backups the attackers couldn't reach, including a remote copy stored at our office, and a team willing to spend the weekend rebuilding.

Two things would have prevented it: MFA on VPN access, and retiring a server running an operating system that no longer received security updates. Both had been recommended. Neither felt urgent until the morning it was the only thing that mattered.

Ask your IT provider this week whether MFA is required on every remote access path you have, and whether anything in your environment is running software that no longer gets patched. Better to find out on a normal Tuesday than during an incident.
